Phil Steele picks UGA in the East; SI does not

Uga IX suffers from no lack of affection. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

In the never-ending attempt to keep you apprised of all preseason predictions I deem pertinent, I note the following: In a post for ESPN Insider, that man Phil Steele picks Georgia to go 11-1 and win the SEC East; Andy Staples of SI.com picks Georgia to go 10-2 and finish second to South Carolina.

Ol’ Phil, whose idiosyncratic yearbook apparently sold out quickly at the Publix on South Cobb Drive and the East-West Connector (though not before I bought mine), has already tabbed the Bulldogs as his No. 1 surprise team in the nation. The assembled SEC media, however, picked South Carolina to win the East by a goodly margin last month in Hoover, Ala., which was something of a surprise to me if no one else. (Although Mark Richt did say, “I’d have us first.”)

The AJC countdown of the Top 25, which remains ongoing on our “today’s paper” app and myajc.com, will be presented in its full grandeur — sorry, got carried away — and those of you who might have seen that Georgia was ranked No. 9 as of last Friday … well, it’s higher than that now. Credit/blame the arm injury suffered by Ohio State’s Braxton Miller for messing up my whole top 10.

As noted last week, multiple outlets — SI, ESPN the Magazine, the USA Today coaches’ poll and now the Associated Press poll — all have Georgia ranked No. 12. As also noted several times, I believe Georgia will go 10-2 and win the East.

All this speculation is about to end; they’re actually going to play some games. And me, I don’t know whether to be happy or sad. I do love reading preseason picks.

Until Richt prepares a Georgia team properly to play a tough road or neutral site game, it will be the same results every season.  It seems the only big game UGA players are up for is the Florida game, but even that was a struggle until Muschamp arrived.  UGA almost blew it in Jacksonville last year with a decent part of the offense still available.  Arthur Lynch had some great plays, but when he sat down and cried after dropping that lateral, and the Florida defender returned it, that is inexusable.  Then he dropped two crucial passes at the ned of the Nebraska game.  You have Damien Swann muffing a fair catch at Vandy single handidly losing that game.  Its stupid crap like the things I just mentioned why we continually lose to inferior teams on the road, and get blown out by good teams on the road.  We will likely lose at South Carolina, Mizzou, and Jacksonville this year and beat Auburn at home.  When we beat Auburn at home everybody willl say "UGA has put it together" blah blah blah.

Win a damn road game against a ranked team UGA!  Its the coaches jobs to get them mentally ready.

I am not sold on the Dawgs winning anything at this point. UGA will have to throw the ball downfield to be effective against the better teams that it must beat to win the division, and I was of the opinion that the Dawgs would have MM, JSW or both back for the 2014 season when I was more upbeat about the Dawg's chances. At this point, and after hearing Mike Bobo, overrated OC extraordinaire talk about having Nick Chubb and Sony Michel on special teams while B. Douglas gets snaps on offense gives me NO reason to think that Georgia will win anything AGAIN under Mark Richt. Personnally, if I need yards in the run game, Chubb's blocking efforts are NOT the first thing that matters to head coaches who inspire to win championships. Those kinds of coaches are smart enough to run plays that benefit their five star players in order to move the football towards the goal line, and cross it. That is what the objective is in the game of football. Oh, and to do that more than the opponent does it. I saw an article that said "Richt likes Georgia's chances". Richt has NO idea how bad it is going to get if his team does not accomplish something in 2014.

Ohio can still win it all with a number two qb.  It's been reported they have a great coach.

Why not just go all the way and rank Georgia #1? After all, they are undefeated. ;-)

What is New with Phil Steele?

He picks Georgia to win the SEC every year, finish in the Top 10 and land in a major bowl game.

If I were a true Georgia Fan I would beg Phil Steele to pick someone else and get that Book off their backs.

Georgia has the best running back in the country in Gurley, a good Wide Receivers Corps, but after that the program is young, or just average.  Heck Georgia may end up winning the SEC East, but in the big picture does that mean very much this year?  Who knows, different set of rules this years.

One being realistic has to go back and look at the 2014 Bowl Game and wonder what will be different with this edition.

Mark, I agree with one thing you said, it is fun to see all the predictions, and all these so called experts try to explain why a team is going to win a league and compete for a National Championship.

We all witnessed this past Monday what losing one key player does to a team before the season begins( see Oho State) and how it changes the dynamic of a team.

See how simple that was Dawg350.

I posted a simple fact like UGA has beat GT 5 times in a row and 9/10 (for the 3rd time in less than 1 hour) and PRESTO, another reprobate comes out of the wood works.

It's so easy that it gets boring.  At least when you take candy from a baby the baby can offer some form of defense.

Hey Dawg350 don't let the self-professed worshippers of losers bug you.

Just post simple facts like UGA has beat GT 5 times in row and 9/10, and, UGA beat UT 4 times in a row and 10/14.

Then don't respond to their dribble.  Just let them emulate the teams they follow - lose yet again and go away pouting.

UGA like the Braves can't win the big one.  Good but not a national power,

Do you what the best part of being a GT fan is????

@Tamparitus I concur, the dogs choke to several "good" to fair teams every year.  and the Gators are poised to return to their domination of UGA like the last 25 years.  Spurrier loves to beat up on Uga at home.  The dogs will lose 4 games, then in a bowl again and Richt will continue to collect his fat paychecks!  The song remains the same...

@ColumbusDawg Mitchell and JSW probably won't play against Clemson (I know JSW won't because he'll be serving a one game suspension). But there is a chance they'll be back for the game in Columbia. Remember, we have a bye week before we face SC. That gives them plenty of time to heal and get ready for the Gamecocks.

@CallingOutWhiners Ohio State hasn't played a down yet. You have no idea how it changed the dynamic. It sucks, yes, but you just might be surprised for the good.

@Jack5150 Amen to that,. It's too damn hot for HS football tonight. I'm sure they've been hydrating and the parents are all over it.  The bands and cheerleaders too!

@Reaganite One more tip, since I like to me somewhat of a mentor for our less experienced AJC trolls. If the blog is over 24 hours old, its not really worth it. You don't get much bang for your buck after the first day.

GTBob
GTBob

@Reaganite So you post something negative about GT, and a GT fan responds and you declare victory? You really need to work on your trolling game. That is barely even trash talk.

That's true. Lol. These losers cry themselves to sleep at night thinking about UGA.....just wishing they could beat us. They live vicariously thru other teams like it's going out of style.

@Reaganite Beating 5 win and 7 win teams. The hallmark of success at UGA.

You're right my friend. The only reason those varmints are on here is because UGA has more success than their favorite teams do and that's a fact.

I did not say they were going to be good or bad, I said it changed their dynamic which is what Urban Meyer said this week on Sirius XM College Sports 91.  He said that with Miller they were able to do certain things due to his wealth of knowledge and ability and the other quarterbacks had different skill sets which immediately changes their offense and what they will be able to do.

In the Big 10 and their schedule it is not hard to win 10 games when you go to Maryland twice and do not leave Ohio until late October.
