Many outlets have UGA No. 12; this one won’t

A rather strong consensus is emerging: Georgia will enter the season ranked midway through most Top 25s but not in many Top 10s. (There are exceptions, as we’ll see.)

Sports Illustrated just revealed its Top 25, and SI has Georgia No. 12, with three SEC teams ahead of it, South Carolina included.  ESPN The Magazine likewise has the Bulldogs No. 12, also with three SEC teams ranked higher, South Carolina among them. That dovetails with the USA Today coaches’ poll, which had Georgia — do I detect a theme emerging? – No. 12 in the land and fourth in the SEC.

As for the exceptions: Sporting News has Georgia No. 15. (It’s also the only outlet I’ve seen that doesn’t have Florida State No. 1. SN goes with Oklahoma.) The idiosyncratic Phil Steele has the Bulldogs No. 7 and picks them to win the SEC East. (He also considers Georgia the team most apt to surprise — in a good way — as was previously noted in this space.)

And then there are the AJC’s own rankings, as lovingly and laboriously compiled by yours truly. We’ve been counting down the Top 25 in the College Football Extra section of our Today’s Paper app, and as of this morning we’d gotten to No. 10 (South Carolina). Georgia’s name hasn’t yet been called. I’m fairly certain it will be soon.

It really is quite simple. You do not usually have a 3 loss team ranked that high, and that is exactly what UGA is. They will lose at least 3 games. They possibly will start 0-2, although the Clemson game is very winnable. South Carolina and Florida will knock UGA out of the East, and at least one more loss comes from either Auburn, Tennessee or Missouri.  Dog fans be happy to finish 9-3 and yet another trip to the Capital One or Outback or Gator Bowl.

Ranking college teams before the season starts is absurd and is only good for selling magazines.

With all the deflections and injuries and a new qb, they have no reason to be ranked top 10

Clemson will win by 3

That time of year where the delusional say "this is going to be the year". The game passed Richt years ago. Then in a few weeks we will hear "if this guy hadn't got injured, if this hadn't happened, if the referees hadn't. ...." Love their optimism. Its just not reality.

I just really dont know if Richt can shake off being the Frank Beama of the SEC..... 9-3 is my prediction

Has any of you mutts ever consider if the AJC spins everything, how do you know when they are telling you the truth?

You had a talk with your editor , didn't you Brad? It had to do with changing your attitude didn't it?

So basically sports fans, the best AJC writer will be acting like a homer the rest of the year for Ga. The rest of Ga sports you will get his respected opinion. I know Brad, job security.

By the way Brad, you were right about the Braves before the first of the  season.

Oh by the way, go ahead and start your predictions. You have a way of counting the wins and not the loses. Isn't that the way Ga does it? Ky doesn't do it.

The #1 team the year before is always ranked #1 to start the next season like it is the same team as the year before and they will have the same season again. They usually don't.

Ah, here we go again.  The Koolaid is flowing.

FLASH!  Markt Wrecked is still the head coach.

When was the last year that he exceeded expectations?  When has he ever exceeded expectations except when he was first hired?

There is little knowledge gained by the second kick from a mule.  When will you mutts understand?

UGA should really have the best team in the country every year.  The state has the most talent, the institution is superior to Alabama, LSU, or South Carolina; and Athens is really just an hour away from the Georgia Dome and Hotlanta...

In spite of these advantages, Richt always just does the minimum needed to survive.  he is really one of the worst head coaches in the NCAA.  The fact that the university and fan base continue to tolerate him is a sad reflection on the Bulldog Nation.  A Nation that bears no resemblence to the glory years of Erskine Russell, the Junkyard Dogs, and Herschell Walker.

So in less than a month, the annual process will begin.  Remember last year?  We lost to Clemson.  Previous years saw losses to South Carolina ( actually a demolition), Boise State, Oklahoma State, and lowly Colorado.  What a disgrace.

But Richt is still held in reverence.

The real losers out of this are the players and parents that go in the tank for Richt.  They won't be playing for championships, but always will be talking about the "one that got away."  The latest is the immaculate reception from Auburn.  It was really just horrendous coaching from Richt (who hired Grantham anyway and let him run off the leash?).

So, in the vote, I know that at the end of the season, UGA will not be in the Top 25.  Just like the year before when they were absolutely loaded with talent.

Why does UGA get so many preseason injuries every year under Richt?  Duh....  What are the possibilities?  Excessively rough practices?  nope.  How about condition of the field?  nope.  Well, could it possibly be strengh and conditioning and poor coaching?  ABSOLUTELY.

Why are there so many Dawgs in court or in jail or on suspension the first two three or four games of the season?  The other best SEC teams do not have this problem.  Is it because of the overzealous Athens PD?  nope.  Could it be laissez faire is everywhere lack of discipline while Richt plays the Hollywood role?  Yep...

So enjoy the academic theories today, boys.   Drink that koolaid.  Truth will be evident following Clemson and South Carolina.  It will be a very long season indeed...

I honestly don't understand why Georgia should even be in the preseason top 15 this year. Last year, Clemson defeated Georgia. Their only two losses were to Florida State and South Carolina. They finished the season by defeating Ohio State in the Orange Bowl. Still, the Coaches Poll only saw fit to rank them number 15.

Why should UGA be ranked any higher than Clemson?

@SinceVince Coach Beamer has done a great job at VT. Looking back before he came they had struggled to say the least. Frank turned down the Bama job and he would have been a good fit at Bama.(Dennis Franchione took the gig).

@WhiskeyBreath Mark and the others should be homers for UGA and GT. The media in Alabama is a homer for the cow college and has been for 40 years. The barn complex has to buy coverage and they have no problem is doing just that.

No they aren't. Auburn won the NC in 2010 and were ranked #23 in the 2011 AP preseason poll.

@SnoopDawg I have to admit Brother looks real good adjusting his sunglasses , his entire

look 5 minutes before kick off. He is almost as good looking as he thinks he is.

I think it is fair to say the guy loves the camera.

@SnoopDawg and the beat goes on.

Must be nice to have the Greatest Christian as the head coach.

Don't believe it, just ask him.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly who Clemson and SC is going to use to beat us with. UGA's talent level is superior to both.

@kerryb I guess I do like Snoop.

Beamer has actually coached in a "national championship game". They took a 1 point lead into the 4th quarter when the wheels fell off
