UGA’s Ramik Wilson: ‘We need to win now’

HOOVER, Ala. – Three Georgia Bulldogs showed up for Day 4 of the interminable SEC Media Days wearing bow ties. “Chris Conley’s idea,” linebacker Ramik Wilson said, speaking of the filmmaker/wide receiver. “A great idea.”

(Let the record show that Conley — who bought the ties and tied them for the other two — arrived wearing Batman socks. Wilson and Todd Gurley didn’t follow that trend.)

It took Gurley, who doesn’t much enjoy media interaction, 30 seconds of his session with Georgia reporters to author his first eye-roll, but the tailback bore the burden in good humor. (And wore his bow tie nicely, it must be said.) Gurley, who’s the nation’s best tailback, got most of the attention in this pre-show session, followed by Conley. Then came Wilson, who only led the SEC in tackles in 2013.

Admittedly he did it on a defense that wasn’t otherwise unyielding. “I don’t think we were that bad,” Wilson said. “We produced a lot of sacks. We were good against the run. We need to get better at little things. We have to work on getting off the field (on third down). And turnovers — we need more turnovers.”

Then: “We’ve got a lot of talent coming back. We’ve got to put it together.”

Then this: “We need to win now. We’ve got the team to do it.”

Maybe they do. Certainly the Bulldogs, with Jeremy Pruitt replacing Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator, have the capacity to reclaim their division. But the assembled media just anointed South Carolina as the No. 1 choice in the SEC East. Whoa, Nellie.

Not that Mark Richt, who coaches Georgia, was fazed. “I’d have us first,” he said, smiling.

From myajc.com: The media disagrees, but Richt likes UGA in the East.

More Media Days fun and frolic:

From myajc.com: The confident LSU Tigers could grab the SEC title.

From Wednesday: Missouri winning the SEC East? Still hard to believe.

From Tuesday: There’ll be no sudden rise for Jones’ fallen Vols.

From myajc.com: At 69, Spurrier can see success without SEC titles.

Also from myajc.com: Auburn’s Malzahn will have a tough time topping 2013.

From Monday: SEC Media Days – way too much of a dull thing.

I heard ESPN say Saban was taking questions about his strength of schedule lol.  If UGA and South Carolina indeed top the East this year, then it will be the 4th season in a row Alabama hasn't played any of the good teams in the East during the regular season.  Add to that they decide to schedule a single good non conference matchup in 4 which again is at a neutral site.  WVU isnt bad, but they arent a top opponent by any means.

If Saban keeps talking about wanting the SEC to go to 9 games for better schedules, why doesn't he just go out and sign another good game?  He doesnt want to do that unless everyone else has to?  He just signed a neutral site game with USC in 2016, and I guarantee USC will also at least play Notre Dame that year. Bama had cancelled a home and home with Michigan St. because they wanted to make them neutral site games.  Its just a load of politics from Saban.

The season is going to depend on their health.  Getting Gurley, Marshall, Mitchell and Scott-Wesley back healthy will be huge.  Honestly speaking, UGA loses 2 games last year if not for all the injuries at the worst (@Clemson and @Auburn) and wins the East.  If you honestly think they lose to Missouri and Vandy with Gurley, Marshall, Mitchell, Bennett, and Scott-Wesley in the lineup, then you're just trolling.  They still should have beat Vandy without all those guys and took Missouri deep into the 4th.

After that, the defense definitely needs to play a lot better.  Hutson Mason obviously needs to show a lot of improvement, but that tends to happen with a full offseason with the first team.  I don't expect Aaron Murray numbers, but with all that talent around him, UGA's offense should be good.  The schedule lines up well too as they miss Bama, LSU, and A&M out of the West and get Clemson and Auburn at home.

SC as the top pick in the East is a bit iffy.  Losing Conner Shaw is huge and they lose a ton off the defense.  They also open with A&M this year.  Missouri is even worse off because they also lose all those big WRs that gave everyone fits last year as well as their starting QB, MIchael Sam, and others off the D.  Clemson lost Boyd, Watkins and others and that game is at home.  Auburn lost their RB, some O line, and several off the defense.  UGA returns the most, but not having Aaron Murray is a huge piece to replace.

I believe that UGA has a real shot at making a run at the playoff this year. It's going to be interesting how the panel votes on the final four!

Hasn't that been the case for the past 34 years

Are dawg fans year in and year out the most optimistic fans in preseason in all of college football, or does it just seem that way?

Chris Conley's comment about Tray Matthews' ouster deserves to be shouted from the rooftops...'Coach gave him a lot of chances but in the end he didn't want to be there, so he let him go'. Conley may already be my all-time favorite Dawg...a young man with a bright future.

By the way, the talking heads are all over Hugh Freeze and Ole Misc. (just saw that and like it)...what I'll always remember is that two seasons ago he brought an admittedly improved team to Athens and whatever network that was carrying the game treated it as 'The Second Coming' with all the pre-game hype on him and the Rebel team...even broadcast the lockerroom talk and used whatever their 'mantra' was for that season 'Never Quit (or die)', or something, all game long. And that thing I recall is that at the end of the game they stuck a mic in front of him and he said that his team were forced into submission - in other words, they were whipped till they quit. Looking forward to having em eat their 'mantra' words again next time.

Georgia is going to have a big offense again this year.  If we are a little salty on defense we can win SEC.  The winners of the SEC usually play for NC.

That's scary to think about.

@MikeS777  They don't lose at Auburn either, with the playmakers in the lineup they don't get down so bad in the first half. Different ball game.

Even with everybody hurt for the Vanderbilt game , what lost that game was the worst Targeting call of the season. Wilson made a perfect hit on 3RD down and was kicked out of the game . Vanderbilt get first down and a 15 yard penalty when they would have kicked. The officials gave that game  to Vanderbilt because they didn't know the rules. After that the Defense didn't know what they could do and not do. I hope the head official never officiates another SEC game.

@ronaldtallon Yes, it's that way, at least as far back as 1981. I know about these things, reading here at ajc.com so often about the prowess of each year's U.Ga. team.

@ronaldtallon You'd hear the same optimism on other teams blogs if they had one. The fans of every SEC/ACC team read the AJC where most of the bloggers are UGA fans.

In the end, Matthews only punishment was what? Playing for a better football program. There inlies the problem: Knowing you can go pretty much anywhere you want to go after repeated mistakes and ego-tripping. Georgia must put a top on this wide hole.

slydawg

Does not mean he can play at a high level every Saturday. Until we see him display this pound for pound strength on a consistent basis, it's not too scary to the opponents at all right now. That's what matters right?

@Hangonsloopy @bigmacondawg Hey OSU, how about y'all win a game over the dawgs before you spend your time on this board.

Go ahead and say it's just one game.  You can say that.  One game is exactly the number of NC titles that separates UGA and osu since integration in 1970. That's right.  One.

Compared to Georgia here lately, why not? Where is your proof otherwise. Caution: I graduated from Georgia, so I'm not poopooin them but the football team has not lived up to hype, expectations, or it's capability.

To hell with 1970, check the BCS records, co dog. You only played in 3. Ohio State played in 3 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP games.

@slydawg Georgia is 6-2 vs. Auburn since '05. Would be 7-1 if not for one of the luckiest plays in history and  8-5 overall under Richt. So put that in your pipe and smoke it. UGA owns Auburn.

codawg

@Hangonsloopy @codawg And ZERO wins against the Dawgs.

And I'm not trolling on an osu board.  I don't care.  You sure hang around this one often.  Makes me think this quote.

"I'm from Ohio, but if I had known what it was like down here in the South, I would've crawled down here on my hands and knees" - Frank Sinkwich

Based on how much time you invest here, it appears that you feel the same way.

@slydawg  and sly - cheating in order to "beat bama (which is all auburn really cares about, if they can beat bama the rest will come so they do so by any means necessary) does not make a superior program, just good cheaters.

slydawg
slydawg

@DawgGoneIt And again I ask, what has Georgia won of any significance since 1980? Stop cheerleading those tidbits of crap. What has Georgia won since Richt has been there? Georgia has not won a conference title since when? 2005? So if Auburn has won the conference 3 times since Richt has been at Georgia, a national title, and been to the the NC game twice, what the heck does 6-2 or a make believe 7-1 mean? Absolutely nothing. Now, If you are one those folks who would rather beat a rival than win a title, then you and I are on two different frequencies and you should learn to stay in your lane. It's like talking Chinese to an Arab. No comprende'

slydawg
slydawg

Tell that moral carp to everyone else. If winning by morality is your thing, then win with it, don't use it as a reason why you can't win it all. By that same measuring stick and logic, that means Bama, Auburn, LSU, and Florida are all cheaters. But somehow Isaiah Crowell ended up with an English Bulldog on signing day? Stop it. Every program cheats. How it's done is just a matter of flavor.

Buzz-Off

Wow Sly, your value system sucks!!! I hope you never have children who place winning above morality and ethical behavior!!!
