UGA vs. Notre Dame – a risk well worth running

Georgia has announced that it will play Notre Dame in 2017 (there) and 2019 (here, or more precisely in Athens). When you play somebody good, there’s always the chance you’ll lose. In the grand scheme, however, that will be a risk even more worth taking.

We’re about to enter the playoff era. With a committee to select the teams, as opposed to a combination of computer rankings and polls, strength of schedule is going to matter more than it has. We’re going to see deserving two-loss teams make the four-team field. In the BCS era, only one two-loss team played for the title — LSU in 2007.

That was the year Georgia also had two losses, but the Tigers played the better schedule. (Which isn’t to say LSU was playing better than the Bulldogs at the regular season’s end. It wasn’t.) Given the changing face of the sport, I think the motto of a big-time program ought to mirror that of the British Special Air Service: Who dares, wins.

Now here’s one for y’all to discuss: Will Mark Richt, who’s 54, still be coaching Georgia in 2017? (I’m not suggesting he’ll get fired before then, mind you. I’m wondering if he’ll choose to call it a career.) How about 2019? And will the Bulldogs complete more passes than they did in their only previous meeting with the Irish?

On Jan. 1, 1981, Georgia quarterback Buck Belue was 1-for-12 against Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, but the one — for seven yards — was a key completion as the Bulldogs were nursing their fourth-quarter lead en route to a national championship. Me, I’m guessing Georgia completes at least three passes come Sept. 9, 2017.

From myajc.com: Regarding Tray Matthews, transfers and second chances are tricky.

Ole Tampa gator calling the dogs out on sage Hardin.......basically saying Hardin is no good....Tampa is another troll. I think Hardin will be a great player for the G. He will put on the weight and will be a solid if not great player....he is also well spoken...he is educated..

Richt is about .500 when it comes to rematches. 1 - 1  Okie State, 1-1 Colorado, 1-1 Boise State, 1-1 Nebraska and after we play Clemson in the season opener he will be 2-2.  He will probably make UGA 1-1 when we play Notre Dame.

Well just got through eating my supper...I had lamb and rice ...a Bulgarian traditional meal. Let me tell y'all trolls something....everyone of you disgust me. I can't wait for UGA to be national champions in 2014 and 2015! Todd gurley will be the difference maker...watch what I tell ya. Nick Chubb will be the star in 2015 national championship. I may now of had a few beers in me...but if I was back in the states I would take my dragger and drag everyone your sorry tails out of homes. I'm the real deal....you ignorant tech fans best know that. Peace out losers

UGa OoC games in order of apperance since 1970 Georgia Tech, Clemson & So Carolina were pretty much the Only Home & Home series. Until just a few years back UGa wouldn't go past the Mississippi River to play a game.

UGA is one of the few teams in the SEC that is not scared to play a tough OOC schedule.

Notre Dame is a brand not a football team. Georgia is the spin misters of the SEC. They can figure more ways to play nobody and make it look like nuclear power. They have had some of the easiest schedules in the SEC and still can’t bring anything home. What is going on in South Carolina and Auburn is the news here. Missouri has passed Georgia too.They take second hand talent after Georgia has picked over it and beat Georgia with it. You want to play someone who is going to be good in the next century play FSU or even Louisville, who has half your players transferring there anyway. It got to be 40 below this winter in South Bends hope that is not the new trend, I imagine some of your disciple problems wouldn’t even come out of the locker-room up there in those conditions.

@Dawg350 Take your Bulgarian dinner to the Travel Section and stay of the sports blogs.

@BCB you are really typing that with a straight face? UGa rarely ever travles to play an OoC game. You just did that a few years back for a game that was farther than the mississippi river. Clemson was one of the few H-n-H OoC teams the dogs played.

Preach my brother....UGA isn't going to back down from anybody, Richt basically said a while back that UGA would play anybody...anywhere.

Nothing "every" changes?

Are you trying to rival Buckeye's "edumacation"?

Thomas.....UGA has all the weapons a team needs to win a championship. Nobody can beat UGA...UGA can only beat themselves with sloppy penalties and turnovers. I expect us to be a more disciplined team because of Jeremy Pruitt. Pruitt isn't a fool...he came to UGA because he thought we could win a title. Mason will be a great qb for us......he is 6'3...so he can see over the OL. Mason is deadly in the short passing game....he will force defense's to creep up to the line of scrimmage...that's when he will bust you with a deep pass to malcom Mitchell! UGA will be great this year....bank on it.

@Dawg350 you're right.

@TravisBickle5150 @BCB

That is true, regrettably--with the exception of the few years Damon Evans made an effort to "spread the brand" by agreeing to play decent OOC competition home-and-home. My hope is that the new playoff format's emphasis on SoS will encourage more of that.

@Dawg350 can you please provide the link to that quote? Richt doesn't make the scheduling choices.

@Dawg350

Sure hope you're right about that, 350. Clemson, for example, should be on our sked at least every other year, given their geographical proximity and the SEC-ACC thing. They're a natural rival, and while we own them overall, there've been many memorable games in that series. Kevin Butler's game-winning 60-yard FG comes to mind.
