Phil Steele: UGA could ‘shock the nation’ in 2014

Phil Steele’s college football yearbook includes abbreviations that make your head spin — “LY” stands for “last year” — and more information than any human can process. The yearbook isn’t on stands yet – it arrives Tuesday, though a digital version is available now through an iTunes app — and we know from a Steele post on ESPN Insider that Georgia won’t crack his preseason top five. (That five: Florida State, Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and UCLA.)

But another ESPN Insider post informs us that Steele isn’t short-selling the Bulldogs. On the contrary, he lists them No. 1 among his top 10 surprise teams for 2014. He writes:

Last season, they had just three returning starters on defense, and, as you would expect, the inexperienced unit allowed 29 points per game. This season they have eight returning starters, led by a linebacking corps that I rank No. 1 in the country. In 2013, they played Clemson and South Carolina in back-to-back weeks but have a bye between them this time. I really like new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt’s attitude on defense, and keep in mind he has coached on the past three national championship teams (Alabama 2011 and 2012, Florida State 2013) and could make it four in a row here.

Got that? Ol’ Phil is suggesting that Georgia might just WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. And before you laugh/scoff/label-him-a-moron, note this: Steele’s No. 1 surprise team for 2013 was …

Florida State.

Every off-season, y'all say the same - despite we ARE 54-26 after 2007.

Having to beat all these great teams this up-coming season, you categorically refuse to address that even vs just teams who made the top 25 after 2007, Mark Richt is ONLY 7-22.

The G-Day Game, we did nothing to even PRACTICE our # 100 Special Teams.

The Secondary which is our thinnest weakest area on Defense, we had 2 Starters kicked-off the team, one to Auburn and one to Louisville, and another Starter in the Secondary, just up and quit to go to Louisville on his own.

# 65 in Rushing, in this Pass-Happy Offense, Mike Bobo said last week DO NOT EXPECT ME TO RUN THE FOOTBALL.

Duh - not until the game is at-hand.

Our QB threw one deep ball all G-Day Game and it the opening play of the game for all of just only 29 yards Forward Pass, and it was LOFTED SKYWARD and appeared to the World, a PUNT - honestly, after floating his passes for 5 years now here, with NO ZIP.

Our OL, a problem annually, finds 3 of the Starting OL gone - and the blocking Tight End gone too.

We've had issue after issue on the road playing top teams most recently now, and we face # 5 Missouri and # 4 South Carolina on the road.

# 100 in most penalties, and Attrition off-field continuing again, we've spent the entire off-season AGAIN saying how it is not important that of the 118 Scholarship Recruits Mark Richt signed, with redshirts, to play this up-coming season, only 80 remain - 67 % and not 1 was drafted early by the NFL.

We've watched as our SEC brethren have passed us by on our Facilities seemingly unable with the most cash on hand in all of the NCAA, to even build our guys an indoor practice facility, and Sanford Stadium is one of the smallest stadiums now with an entire end of the field remaining to be enclosed.

We stand pat and do nothing.

We look at the tough opponents on our schedule and say we can beat them.

Then, we LOSE to EVERYONE

and STILL

you run in here every off-season and brag of what we'll do.

Put the pipe down, smell the roses, try for once in your life to DEMAND MORE...

not brag on them all yet another off-season.

Todd Gurley II said it best.  Go read his quote.

TIRED OF BEING MEDIOCRE - TIRED OF LOSING...

then, there is YOU !

Congratulations nincompoops National Championship in the off-season

followed by EXCUSES immediately thereafter.

I am not surprised at all that 61 % of you say National Championship this coming season, because it is WHAT YOU DO, despite all the facts to the contrary.

Heck "Bark" Bradley, They shock the world every year.   I'm surprised they're not pre-season #1 again.

Yes, they could shock college football this season. If they manage to win more than 9 games, it will be a shock felt throughout the world of college football. As usual, UGA is overrated, and will spend New Years in either Orlando, Jacksonville, or Tampa.

Everyone points to the new DC, and he might be a good coach, but we really do not know. He had a stacked D last season, and the year before at Alabama, his D was very good, but had trouble stopping Aaron Murray and the Dawg PASS offense. Again, he had a loaded D. Now he is starting from scratch with some returnees and some redshirts, and some raw freshmen. They already are below Bama, LSU, Florida, and S. Carolina in defense, and with all the defections and dismissals, we will find out early how they stack up with 2 games against the best teams in South Carolina.

The offense will be able to score points, but with the suspect D, I can see a typical GT season where the offense has to outscore the points allowed by the D. INHO.

Pass Defense will be our downfall this year again as you just cannot lose that many established players and expect to be among the top 2 or 3 elite teams in the nation.  Quarterback play is also a question.  Hutson is capable but unproven in the heat of the battle with a big game on the line.

If Gurley has a monster year with help from the new running backs and Marshall, Dawgs will be competitive and then some.  Need more quality play from the offensive line.

I could give a rip about ANY media pundit prediction on the outcome of Georgia's football season. Most say UGA wins the East, a few say SC, which is not out of the question. Most say UGA wins East....loses to Bama in the dome. Not out of the question either, but pundits are basing this on the way Bama beat UGA in 2012. The Dawgs run defense improved by leaps and bounds in 2013. Lacey would not have had his way with last year's run D, but this is not reported. It's kind of like the media with Obama. I fully expect the secondary to be leaps and bounds better than last year. I expect this because I expect UGA players to take pride in improving on their screwups. I may be the only one, but I fully expect a complete turn around on special teams as well. If the Dawgs make the dome in 2014, I like their chances. If everyone will remember Gurley was the only effective running back against the Tide's D. Marshall is not effective against a top notch D line. Enter Mr. Nick Chubb. By the end of the season, I believe Chubb will be spelling Gurley more than Marshall for just that reason. I also believe that there has not been the kind of poor mouthing by a coach since Dooley left until Pruitt came in.

Once again Mark Bradley is pushing for his next job, President of the Phil Steele fan club.  Picking FSU last year was not a reach as most services had them going unbeaten and winning the ACC.

If UGA stays healthy they will be better than last year but that defense was so bad last year that  returning 8 starters could be a bad thing and it's usually year 2 or 3 before the effects of a new def coordinator really start to show.  On the plus side they do get a much lighter schedule this year after the first 2 games so if they start 2 and 0 then  the possiblity that they could be this years Auburn is valid but the only way that comes close to happening is if Todd Gurley stays healthy.

The only "established player" that was lost was JHC. Wiggins would have never started for Pruitt anyway, and Matthews was never an established starter. Mauger started more games than Matthews. C. Moore will do well at one safety spot, and Pruitt will have his final pick at the other. Swann will eithr shape up or ship out, and Pruitt let it be known tha he is waiting on Fenteng, who is highly regarded at corner.

gtcaryd

@ColumbusDawg How in the wide world of sports do you think your defense will be better this year? They are playing at another school.

@ColumbusDawg Well Columbus CJP didn't bring any players with him, these guys you lost were your better DB 's on your team last year. they were starters, they are gone. There is no one that can replace JHC, whether you like him or not he was a stud and you have no replacement for him. What is your definition of a established player? Is Hutson Mason an established player?

ColumbusDawg

Just because there can never be improvement in any area of the "Institute's" football team does not apply at UGA, just another "Bulldog point of pride"!

If Winston can get away with what he has already done then there is no chance F.S.U will not back him up for anything he wants to do, at least until after the last game of the season  is played two years from now. I guarantee Bobby Bowden is very disappointed in Tallahassee Police Department and F.S.U.'s Athletic Department after dedicating his life to bring the highest Integrity and honesty to the program while he was there.

The  word all over the S P O R T S     W O R L D   is that he has gotten away with  Carnal Knowledge of a female

he had it hid in he clothes( Of course wash-day took care of the clothes smell)

The seafood escapade was settled by the FSU Baseball coach suspending him for 3 innings in a game where he wasn't scheduled to pitch. A   S P O  K E S  P E R SON  for the Semiholes(aka  half-a$$es) said that the Baseball coach also got half the  stolen seafood!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Energy vampire"? You'd do better to spend your energy supporting the team, rather than constantly taking jabs at it. If I can suck any negative energy out of you and your princess love interest, then I will have accomplished something.
