With Matthews gone, who plays DB for UGA?

By Mark Bradley

Guess you've seen this one before. (Jason Getz/AJC)

Guess you’ve seen this one before. (Jason Getz/AJC)

Somebody’s going to play defensive back for Georgia this fall. Question is, does Champ Bailey have any remaining eligibility?

Mark Richt dismissed Tray Matthews from the team Tuesday. Josh Harvey-Clemons got the boot in February. Shaq Wiggins is transferring. That’s three possible starters gone, but what’s truly intriguing is that Matthews expressed via Twitter his desire to play for Auburn or Louisville.

Auburn, as we know, is where Nick Marshall, once a Georgia defensive back himself, wound up playing quarterback and leading the Tigers to the BCS title game last season. Louisville is where Todd Grantham, who coached Georgia’s defense for four seasons, is now working, and it’s also where Harvey-Clemons and Wiggins are headed.

Marshall, as no one will ever forget, threw the pass that Matthews was positioned to intercept/swat away until Harvey-Clemons jostled him and the ball deflected to Ricardo Louis. Three of those four principals are now ex-Bulldogs. Strange world, huh?

Not that Matthews ever did anything in his brief Georgia tenure to stamp himself as irreplaceable. He was arrested on charges of misdemeanor theft by deception this spring. In a statement, Richt said, “We are trying to make room for guys who want to do things right.”

Can’t fault a coach for that. And this is why programs get 85 scholarships, not 22. If Georgia’s recruiting is as good as it’s supposed to be, the Bulldogs will find enough DB’s on this roster to make do. (Damian Swann remains as a starting cornerback; Corey Moore started at safety last season; signee Shattle Fenteng was the No. 1 JUCO cornerback.)

If not, so be it. Playing for Georgia should be a privilege, not a right. No matter how many times Richt has to make that point, it’s a point worth making.

Most top schools in the SEC have the same caliber of kids from the same background! But every year more and more kids are lost at UGA. this doesnt happen at LSU and alabama near as much.  It has been time for a change since we lost to Boise St. We have lost 3 kids who where pretty much all-americans becasue of CMR leadership. Or lack thereof! The bottom line CMR cant win the big game or is everyone blind.  How many seasons does it take! The same CMR who told Cam Newton he could only play TE for UGA.  PLLLLEEEAASSSEEE!

Matthews was one of the four that were charged with receiving double payments for checks of $71.50 issued by the Georgia athletic department. They were arrested by University of Georgia police in March and charged with theft by deception.

Mark: Nary a word about this appeared in your article. Why not?  Would this behavior lent itself to part of the dismissal?

There was a time when the first black mayor of Atlanta, Maynard Jackson, bragged about how his demanding minority set-asides for the enlargement of the Atlanta Airport (now Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport) created "30 black millionaires."

Well, the soon-to-be-built $1.2 billion stadium in downtown Atlanta, replacing the barely 20 years old Georgia Dome, will create an order of magnitude greater black millionaires than Jackson could ever have dreamed of... I agree.  I am sick of hearing from posters who want to win at any cost and with whatever players it takes and couldn't care less what kind of program the HC runs as long as they win championships.  Sure I want to win SEC and BCS championships, but I want to be able to hold my head up too.  Thanks Coach Richt for doing it right.

Trey, you have already made your contribution to Auburn, and Louisville is a better fit.

All of those millionaires were related to his mulatto but and it benefited whom the most? You and your buddies in Sandy Springs and Duluth through tax kickbacks. Not one dollar was spent on the south side of the metro area. Please do not confuse the Black Bourgeois and this hack minority contractor association with all black people. That's like saying you benefitted from the KKK, but in reality, you did....lmao.

@gmwdawg

I agree. Let's take Auburn's National Title for example. If Cam Newton wasn't there Auburn would have lost 3 to 5 games that year. Cam Newton was on campus for about 9 months in all and completed 6 to 12 hour of course work. That mean he past maybe 4 courses and Auburn builds a statue of him. I don't want to ever win a Championship at Georgia like that. It's hollow and it's with a Rent-A- Player. I want the entire team to celebrate not get slighted because one players get's all the credit. Most of the rest of the team had been there 3 or 4 years and were real TEAM members.

Then shut down the entire athletics department or make everything free, including Richt. He can survive off Christian Ministry donations. That's only being fair. To compete is to care about winning, not morals. If morals is higher on your pecking order, then the concept of competition does not suit you. Clearly Richt and all his moral supporters are being hypocritical on this very issue. This coach is not helping or teaching any if these young men the same morals he preaches. Its either kiss the ring from 2005 or go to Alabama...lol. Where is the lesson in an easy way out? If you nor Richt or any else cares about winning, go watch a ballet and read a book. You'll feel better. BTW, I respect your feelings on the matter. Just don't play or watch sports.

Better fit for what? We all know the answer Dr. Of what Phil. Sorry I have flaws also.

Richt just needs to go with the flow if the game and know when to call a time out! 2:30 left and 0 time outs or 44 seconds with 3? I choose the former! We lost a few over the years for lack of time

Management.

@DrPhill That wasn't his fault as much as the coaches. You have to coach them during the whole game every game.

Exactly Cam was here for a second and these folks here. The Auburn family is tight but have a serious problem with being little brother. From the outside looking in I don't want any part of it Arrogant doesn't even begin to describe it. Inferiority complex is the root of the problem. Athens/UGA make Auburn LOOK like well nothing really. Yes I live in Auburn but bleed red and black!

I'd rather not win a Championship than win one with Cam or Jamis or Marshall or Crowell. Did you notice they started calling him CeoWELL after 3 games. He's no Tony DorSETT,. Who was tony Dorsett for many years. I saw his first game at Sanford Stadium he put 100+ on the DAWGS and Pitt tied us 7-7. Major upset. 1977 I believe.

My point was to correct an ignorant European such as yourself and that idiot above about his entitlement rant. There is only a small, elite group of scam artists, mostly of the mulatto variety ( Andy Young, Jackson, Bill Campbell) who race hustle on the Black communities behalf but yet that same community does not benefit from these "brokered deals." These same folks take all their money and taxes to the north side of town. Guess who benefits from that? Be honest with yourself.

@Dawg350 You've lost three DB starters from last year that were mediocre at best and you're hanging your dog collar on a JUCO transfer that has not yet completed his JUCO academics.

You know what that makes you?

Delusional

DawgfromBranch
DawgfromBranch

@gtcaryd@DawgfromBranch@Bubbatavious No one is saying Pruitt is the answer to UGA finally winning a championship. Most of the dismissals/transfers have come on the defensive side of the ball and from the defensive backfield, Pruitt's expertise. But, Dawg fans have to agree that the recent decisions and his influence have been positive and a move in the right direction.

Only trolls would suggest putting a coach on the hot seat before a game is played when said coach is currently not on a hot seat. If the Dawgs start 0-2, they can still win the East, it has happened before.

PMR
PMR

@slydawg but that same black community still keeps your race hustlers in business by continuing to vote for them and follow them just because they are black. Yet they do absolutely nothing for the black community. No different from your mulatto president.

But as to the point of the "rant," it it has no relevance that the black community hasn't profited from the cronyism of these "scam artists" as you deem them. I would use the word criminal. The point, besides the one on your head, is that it is not an open competition to see who can build the stadium for the least at the highest quality. Instead favoritism is shown based on skin color. All that does is increase the cost and increases taxes of some form or another on everyone regardless of skin color.

The other point I would like to make is that you in all your zealousness to correct the ignorant European, corrected something that was never even referred to or implied. I can't see any point in the "European" rant about it benefiting anyone except those contractors chosen. The south side or the black community in general is never mentioned.

So since you had to rush to correct something that wasn't even stated, I have to ask , You mad, bro? If you are, then perhaps you should take your anger out on the people who vote these people into power. Those who vote for someone because they promised to "gimme sompn." Those who vote for someone based solely on his skin color.  The same ones who run into the ground every urban public school system in the nation. Perhaps that would be a better path than correcting this "ignorant European" who simply stated that the building of the stadium would create more black millionaires than Maynard Jackson could have dreamed.

03Sam57
03Sam57

Well I guess Louisville and Auburn like mediocre or maybe I'm not delusional. Auburn loses 3 minimum. Harvey Clemons Matthews and wiggins ? Hope so. Reckon Matthews knew he'd be heading to auburn ? Naw he was cashing checks twice and cursing out his professor and trying to find Marshall so he could find the most lucrative lockers at auburn War Beagles! This is too much fun. Just.bantering. They're all kids some with morals and talent!

@DawgfromBranch @gtcaryd "They" are the same fans and supporters that sang the praises of the late not so great Todd grantham, The UGA fan base will turn like a peeled apple if they start 0-2.

SinceVince

@DawgfromBranch dare not criticize Richt.. you will considered as a troll. Because whether you believe it or not our program has slipped when you lose to Vandy and lost 3 out of 4 to South Carolina . Not to mention our Bowl record as of late. Your record says what you are. Thats the bottom line.

DawgfromBranch
DawgfromBranch

@gtcaryd @DawgfromBranch Being critical of a coach and wanting him to be gone are two different things. I am for the "what have you done for me lately" meaning recently. The decisions Richt and the coaching staff have made are positive and in the right directions. I am for not living in last year or when Todd Grantham was hired.

The UGA fan base that I belong to is the fan base similar to my kids when I tell them we have tickets to go see the Dawgs play. They jump up and down screaming because they are so excited to see a game between the hedges. They have been that way since they were little, regardless of our records over those years. Are they disappointed when we lose, sure they are, but they are ready to go back next week.

Am I critical of Coach Richt, Bobo and other coaches? Of course I am, when it is merited. Do I want to win? Do I want to see different outcomes? You bet I do, but I also realize that each year only 1 team wins a National Championship out of 120+ schools and only 1 team wins a SEC Championship out of 14 schools. Do I expect us to win? Yes. Am I disappointed when we don't? Yes, for weeks. Do I expect us to win a championship with this coaching staff? Yes, I do.

DawgfromBranch
DawgfromBranch

@Bubbatavious UGAs record for the 2014-2015 season is 0 wins and 0 losses. Our record says we are winless and undefeated. So is every one else.

@DawgfromBranch @gtcaryd So did you agree with my post or disagree with it? Sounds like your kids have a pretty darn good dad, treasure every minute of them my friend because they grow up fast, then move away and even though they are still your babies its never quite the same.

SinceVince
SinceVince

@DawgfromBranch I agree but you still have to look at the whole body of work these last few years. I do like what CJP brings to the table from the defensive side of the ball. I fault Richt about special teams ,recruiting in the trenches and what seems that he has been asleep at the wheel these past few years on a number of things. One thing about CJP,  he sure doesnt sugar coat it. Boo Boo needs to lean on Will Friend as well. When you cant run block and dominate a team like Vandy on the offensive line something is wrong! I dont buy the BS about the targeting call against Ray Drew as an excuse. We should have beaten Vandy with our eyes closed with or without Drew.. Thats my beef with this coaching staff.

DawgfromBranch
DawgfromBranch

@gtcaryd @DawgfromBranch Yes indeed. Grand kids are the bomb. Wind them up and let them go home to their parents. My parents and in-laws do that to mine.

DawgfromBranch
DawgfromBranch

@gtcaryd @DawgfromBranch I agree with your post. Any disagreement would be due to semantics. Thanks for the dad comments. Wish I had a pause button.

However, back to my original post...Richt hiring Pruitt will buy himself some time if the team continues to struggle against teams they should beat, even top teams. When Richt hired Grantham, he was on the hot seat. Over the last three years, UGA hasn't really accomplished much, but Richt is still the HC and not on the hot seat. Pruitt's influence has helped encourage Richt to make the tough decisions. It appears that we are going to play with those who want to do things the right way. They might not be the most talented, but they are Dawgs and want to be at UGA. The effort should be there and if the "UGA fan base" can't rally around them and cheer them on, they should join a different fan base.

Grantham was not "the savior" and neither is Pruitt. But he may be close, we shall see.
