3 thoughts on the Braves’ sweep of the Nats

In the wake of the Atlanta Braves’ latest sweep of the Washington Nationals, we offer three variations on a theme:

1. The Braves own the Nats. The Braves are 18-7 against Washington since the start of the 2013 season. That’s a winning percentage of .720. Carried over a full season, that would leave the Braves with 117 wins. In the history of baseball, no team has ever won 117 games.

2. The Braves own the Nats. Of the past nine series between the two, the Braves have won seven, halved one and swept four. The Nationals are 6-0 against every other team in baseball this season, 1-5 against the Braves.

3. The Braves own the Nats, even if the Nats aren’t willing to admit it. Before Sunday’s game, general manager Mike Rizzo told Washington reporters: “They’ve come on the winning side of it more often than we like, but we feel confident against this team. We feel we’re better than this team. We respect them, we respect the organization, but we don’t fear them. We think we’re the better team, and we think at the end of the day we’re going to come out on top.” So much for inspiration: The Braves led 3-0 after an inning, 6-0 after two and 10-2 at the end.

This is a pretty dumb blog entry. I would expect an AJC sports writer to have deeper insights and more insider information than the casual fan, but that's not the case with Mark Bradley's posts. Sorry Mark, but how can you add to what's already currently obvious / available?

But on the Flip side the first round of the playoffs own the Braves

Anytime the Brave beat the Expos is a good day.If they can sweep the Fillies it'll be a great week!Who knows what the rest of the year will bring but it's pretty fun right now.

I seriously doubt any player on the team reads AJC blogs. Blogs are for the fans and not MLB professional baseball players. Pretty simple.

This goes back to the pre-season prognostications by all the so-called "expert analysts" (you know, the brainless running mouths at ESPN, etc.) who were overwhelmingly picking the Nats to win the Division. Now, it's a long season to go yet, but it was very clear all this expert analysis was way off the mark, and Wren signing on Santana and Harang pretty much sealed the leaks. It all starts with the pundits worship of Strasburg, who is IMMENSELY overrated relative to Braves starting pitchers, their overrating the impact of losing Tim Hudson and Brian McCann, and their dismissal of what a beat-up and under-achieving Braves team accomplished in 2013. The Braves are going to be in the hunt at the end, if they don't run away with the Division by August.

The Freeman plunk is unacceptable . Next time we face "Geo" , Bat needs to fly to the mound. That guy is a priiik . MLB needs to revisit the pathetic "warning system " on plunks which gives all pitchers one free unassailable drilling.

Oh yeah, just because the only two losses 'the hottest team in baseball' (Brewers) have is to the Braves, don't go saying 'we own them' too...ok?

@TampGater1  All the haters are at home yelling at their kids and kicking their dogs ha ha... Braves dominated all weekend, Fredi G had an excellent call running Shafe out there to pinch run...made all the right pitching moves.   BJ is smokin the ball and Jup is simply on fire... they have NOTHING to say..

I love it!! BRAVES - 1 Haters - 0

All this talk of 'owning' - I don't like it.  Besides the math angle and a phenomenon known as 'reversion to the mean', there's the mystic idea of 'Karma'.   Either way, folks should take it very easy on the 'own' statements.

Realizing AJC writers are 'homers' - as they should be (all cities' writers are) - it's hard not to be a bit inflammatory.  But ease up, guys - it'll all come back.

All that said - it was really nice to spend a wonderful weekend in Georgia with the Braves and the Masters.

The braves are in the weakest division in baseball -- they will win it easily - hopefully they get out of the first round this time

These wins are nothing if we don't keep it good play going. Keep getting better, keep the good at bats going. Good job, but keep it going. I know they can't win every game, but play well and up to what we are capable of and we will be in every game. Go Braves!

Braves need to beat the Phillies and Mets as well as they beat the gNats.

Braves will play typical Georgia Tech ball - - well enough long enough to get our hopes up, then they will crash and burn....they do it every year and they have perfected it.  It is ok to get our hopes up, but until they win another title, don't let hope cloud our good judgement....

The Nats are still a formidable threat, but the Braves have a chance to open a bit of separation with several of Washington's key players on the shelf. The Phillies, Marlins, and Mets are all really bad clubs, so both the Braves and Nats have a chance to win a ton of games this year.

Great to see B.J. breaking out the last couple of games.

Where are all the daily "doom and gloom" posters.  Nothing at all to say after a Braves sweep.  I was sure there was something negative about the Braves you could say after a sweep of the Nationals.  Just shocking, not.

"Braves own the Nats" x 3. Exactly what this team should not read about themselves at this point in the season..

@scientist2    Maybe you're right.  But they generally don't do it to our face.  They do it online.  Hmmmm.......
