Could Vick help a lot of NFL teams? Absolutely

Adrian Peterson tweeted Wednesday that Michael Vick would make the Minnesota Vikings a playoff team. And you know what? He probably would. The knock on Vick, who’ll turn 34 in June, isn’t that his famous skills have eroded to the extent that he can’t play. It’s that he hasn’t been able to play because he keeps getting hurt.

Vick is set to become a free agent any day now, and if I’m the general manager of a team that doesn’t have a quarterback who has proved he’s capable of winning in the NFL, I’d make that call.

The second act of Vick’s NFL career was him proving he could fit into an organization without being a raging distraction. (The first act, as we Atlantans know, was Vick elevating the Falcons to dizzying heights and then pulling the rug from underneath them.) The third act will be Vick as elder statesman, a proud pro who’s not looking so much to author a comeback story — he did that part in Philadelphia — as to prove that he’s not done yet.

I don’t know if he’s the long-term answer for any franchise. He does get hit a lot. He did throw almost as many interceptions (27) as touchdown passes (35) over his final three seasons with the Eagles, which isn’t what you’d want in a quarterback of any age. (He also lost 11 fumbles.) But he is Michael Vick, and when he’s healthy and precise he has proved he can win. How many available quarterbacks have done half as much?

And no, before you ask, there would be no reason for the team that drafted him in 2001 to make inquiries now. The Falcons have a quarterback who has proved he’s capable of winning in the NFL. What they haven’t proved, at least not lately, is that they can block and tackle.

I have 3 Vick jerseys. Now, I DON'T CARE TO SEE HIS NAME MENTiONED... Tough for me to want to see a guy like that get millions of dollars again and have success after "you know what". The guy really screwed Atlanta and he will never be able to pay the team or fans back for what he did. I wish you would just never mention his name again. Karma seems to be playing a big role in his "come back". No, I'm not a hater or racist. Just really disappointed and disgusted in him. The guy should have done a lot more jail time for,his crimes.

You are so right. By signing with one team Vick can help out the other 31.

With Vick's love of dogs, he should go to UGA and become a coach.

Clowney could help the Atlanta Falcons.

JSSN is clearly an acronym for "Jeff Schultz's Screen Name." The similarities are obvious:

1. Both display a professional sports writer's knowledge of the subject

2. Both are overly critical of the local teams and fans with no apparent allegiance to any other city or franchise

3. Both take pains to appear politically correct, as ambitious reporters are prone to do

If you delete my post you will only confirm my suspicion.

DawgNole.....maybe not fired but he no longer has decision power concerning players.  Promoted to a job where he can't hurt the team.  But the fact is my comment was about re-hiring Vick can get a GM fired.  The Falcons won't touch Vick.

The only way Vick would help any team is....nah, no team needs a dog trainer.

Hilarious...The Curse of Flutie!

2012 Falcons

Doug 4:8 – "And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Flutie rose up against Ryan his brother, and slew him."

The Falcons are 13-3 and the best team in the NFC. They host the 49ers in the NFC title game and storm out to a commanding 17-0 lead.

The game is all but in the books.

But remember, miserable gut-wrenching collapses are a hallmark of the Curse of Flutie. And this time it orchestrated a doozie.

Atlanta’s five second-half drives go like this: interception, fumble, punt, failed fourth down and expiration of time in the fourth quarter, 35 yards from a game-winning score.

Falcons QB Matt Ryan was brilliant in the first half (18 of 24, 271 yards, 11.3 YPA, 3 TD, 0 INT, 151.2 rating), one of the best halves of his career.

But by now you know the inevitable painful QB downfall was imminent: Ryan was less than ordinary in the second half, with his team just 30 minutes away from a trip to the Super Bowl (12 of 18, 125 yards, 6.9 YPA, 0 TD, 1 INT, 63.4 rating).

Even Curse of Flutie fellow Boston College brother Ryan is not immune to vengeful retribution. Ryan’s Falcons are just 1-4 in postseason play.

Signing an aging super star is what gets GM's fired.  He may not be a super star but he is a coach/GM killer.

"Precise" and MV7 do not belong in same sentence (at least as it relates to throwing a football). One of the least accurate passers of modern times (when most QBs hit 60+ %, some even reaching 70%). 20-20 as starter in Philly, after starting 8-3 there (no math expert, but that smells like 12-17 last three years). So if you want to raise a 2-14 team to 4-12 or 5-11, he is it.

"...we have who we have.. Matty Ice.  Who strangely disappears during the off season."

First, it's won, not "one."  Second, it's postseason not "off season."

2012 playoffs versus the Seahawks:  24 of 35 (69%), 3 TD passes, 94% QBR and engineered the drive for the game winning field goal.

2013 playoffs versus the 49ers: 30 of 42 (71% & 400 yards), 3 TD passes  115 QBR and after his defense, as usual, collapsed he engineered the game winning drive and what should have been the game winning TD pass had Roddy been able to haul in the 4th and goal pass while being mugged by the defender.

Disappears?

How do explain why D.J. Shockley and Byron Leftridge? No one in the demographics that you disparaged was up in arms when they were shown the door! WEll, UGA fans were but that's how they roll! Bigotry disguised as support is still bigotry.

See, here's my problem with Jeff "JSSN" Schultz's public sanctimony here on these blogs. Look, sports is supposed to be a man's last vestige of unapologetic masculinity. Guys want to be guys. Black and white, they gather in sports bars, pool halls and dirty bachelor apartments all over America to cheer, curse, sweat, drink beer, binge and belch. There is no room for political correctness in a man cave. Sports blogs is the only place where we can anonymously vent our frustrations, not only over our own team's lack of success, but over the very encroachments onto our machismo from every corner of society under the banner of diversity. Here, we are free to criticize an athlete for any reason we choose, whether it offends another's sensitivity or not.

Then along comes Mr. Pulitzer Prize Winner Wannabe, who feels the civic duty to shoot down every hint of prejudice expressed here. This egghead would have us feel guilty for expressing our naturally strong devotion and bias to our own team, city, state, country, race or gender. This is something we all do, especially men, unless we've been editorially castrated by The Dudley Do-Right of sportswriters. It takes all the fun out of sports and, frankly, my dear JSSN, you can ban me for saying this, but I don't give a damn.

@DumbandDumber

Sorry, you just described Rex Grossman. Moreover, Michael Vick is a lot of things (some great, more good, and somethings football wise Bad). But, it is hilarious when the pretend stats submitters try to cherry pick "one of the least accurate passers of modern times." Ha ha ha ha, what is your TV a Quasar?

JSSN
JSSN

@RangeRover @LMO

Oh, his (Matt Ryan) "QBR" was 95.6. His overall passer rating was 114.8 (roundup to "115"). You conveniently left off his INT and eyes off the ball fumble in the NFC championship game.

JSSN
JSSN

@RangeRover @LMO

Roddy White was no where near the end zone on the 4th down against the 49ers (4th and 4 an the SF 10). That pass was defensed at the 6!

Iluvnutella
Iluvnutella

@JSSN @Iluvnutella Give African Americans SOME credit. Vick is/was far and away a better QB, and the juice wdnt be worth the squeeze backing those two. I like your argument, but Vick and those two guys are two total different animals....NO PUN intended!

RoseUp

@JSSN @RoseUp  Calling names now? Okay, you jerk. You may not be Schultz but you think exactly like him. You are a hypocrite. Yes, I detest Mike Vick because of his complete absence of character. You immediately stereotype and prejudge me because I happen to dislike someone who is black. But I greatly admire Russell Wilson as a player and as a human being. So there goes your theory that hating Vick automatically makes me a member of "this readership." YOU are the one who is prejudiced against a group of people, not I. And you're the worst kind. You think you're taking the high road because you believe you are superior. But I have news for you. Vick is a grown man who must pay the consequences of his own actions. He doesn't need you to defend him against the likes of me.

Something is fundamentally off in you.

Just because you have $17.9M dollars in cap room as of the beginning of the UFA does not mean you get spend that whole amount of it on UFAs! Once again, you keep counting monies not off your books (Tony Gonzalez). You also, have a habit of not counting your reacquired players. They count against the 51! You have to spend on your own free agents. You have to account on your "cap within the cap"gain  (the Rookie cap) and since the Falcons are going to additional compensatory picks, those prorated bonus sums will filter into calculations of the overall caps get special accounting treatment. Until they actually release folks or modify the deals of people on the cap, stop playing loose with assumed cap space. You need to study the cap instead of talking so much.

JSSN
JSSN

@RangeRover

If it was $30M instead of the $26.9M it is (assuming one thing). And that is "assuming Tony Gonzalez ever files his retirement paperwork, which STILL hasn't been filed! You're just this side of flat earth creationist when it comes to sense! You need to be dollar-for-dollar in free cap tomorrow night! Teams have flown up into the Falcons free cap range this week! You're useless, you play fast and loose with numbers!

RangeRover

@JSSN

His completion % was 71.43% and I rounded it down to 71% as I consistently rounded down everything for unnecessary preciseness.

You, of all people, shouldn't be challenging one's integrity.

@JSSN .....................you really can't say "defensed"..........Ryan's pass was behind Roddy.  The defender did nothing to break up the pass........

RangeRover
RangeRover

@JSSN @RangeRover

Go look at the replay, dolt,  Had Roddy not been mauled he walks into the end zone on this play.  It was a perfectly called play, perfectly thrown pass, and a horrible no call by the official.  Also, we could play games all day--like Harry Douglass famous Brain Fart on the perfect play and pass that would have been a walk-in TD--but the point was Ryan's performance and it was overall quite good.  Give Ryan either of the Seahawks or 49ers defenses and he had likely two Lombardi's now.

@Iluvnutella

"need I go on?"

No, you need to be relevant. Calling things "dinosaurs" but you're here (critic or supporters, you're here)! What does that say about you Nero?

Where did "I" say the Falcons had to keep Michael Vick? My point from the beginning of the Vick situation was that the Falcons needed for Michael Vick to: 1. Get out of prison and get back in the NFL. It was the only way they could regroup any relief under the old CBA 2. You needed let Vick have an opportunity to play well simply because made the chance that he could pay his debtors beyond the Falcons and his family could be taken care of. No rational person wants to wish bad on his children. 3. As I said earlier, if Matt Cassel, Matt Schaub, and Christian Ponder can be touted as NFL QBs, Michael Vick at 33 (soon to be 34) is one as well.

I have Sirius Radio, what's your problem?

No, you used a simplistic argument with no merit. Joey Harrington was an NFL starter. David Garrard has been an NFL starter. Taveris Jackson has been an NFL starter. You gave a cheap bigot comment. No matter how you choose to "shade" it! You can't make people love Matt Ryan. It perplexes some people. It is not about Michael Vick, it is all about Ryan.

"You think exactly like him (Jeff Schultz)"

Ha ha, you live in some weird vacuum devoid of good sense if you believe such is the case. I disagree on myriads of things with Jeff Schultz. I don't "prejudge" you. I can tell you one thing, you got a hell of an case of the assumptions. "This readership" meant exactly that, is not one person or viewpoint.

@JSSN  JSSN, I apologize. I didn't mean to resort to name calling. You know your sports and I'm sure you're not a jerk. You're right about one thing at least. Vick does arouse a lot of passions in this town, including mine. Have a good night man.

@RangeRover

Ryan went to his comeback well, and came up dry the entire 2nd half. That defense was flat tired from the 49ers driving the ball down their throats! Go and re-watch the game on the NFL Network. 3 and outs littered the Falcons 2nd half! You can blame the defense, The 49ers did not panic, they stuck to what they do and they won, plain and simple!

The happiest people in Atlanta are 1980 Falcons, they are off the hook as you folks do now is whine about the collapse of January 13!

You weren't going to beat the Ravens with Separated shoulder Matt Ryan. They saved you a Minnesota Vikings like embarrassment!

JSSN
JSSN

@RangeRover

But he doesn't have those "defenses" and many of us have pointed it out. They should have built the team accordingly! Still, you and your ilk are too busy calling people "trolls" and "dolts" for making that point objectively clear! Good luck with that, The former State wrestling champ can push off all day long against DBs, but let a real strongman get in the box with him and you cry "interference!"

JSSN

@RangeRover

I've watched that play 400 times, it is one of my faves! Dude, you folks never cry when Moore, Samuel, and McClain GET hands on people in the short passing game. It was inside the 5 yard zone. Nobody is going to throw a flag on that play. You got lucky when Robinson stripped Crabtree at the goal line. Moreover, you still would have gotten into the endzone! As the last trip to Candlestick proved, that is no given with the Falcons, and you know it! Roddy got beat to the spot, Bowman is your nightmare!
