Big shock: Auburn fans are mad at Bama signee

By Mark Bradley

If you're an Auburn fan, that's a scarlet "A." (AP photo)

If you’re an Auburn fan, that’s a scarlet “A.” (AP photo)

Speaking of loutish fan behavior — as we just did on myajc.com, our premium site, in a column regarding Marcus Smart of Oklahoma StateAndrew Bone of TideSports.com reports that Alabama signee Rashaan Evans, who’s from Auburn and who’s the son of two Auburn alums, and his family are suffering the kneejerk wrath of Auburn backers. (Esteemed colleague Michael Carvell addressed the issue yesterday.)

In Bone’s story, Evans is quoted as saying:

Someone actually put out an article about my family’s business telling all Auburn fans not to go there. We are eventually going to start losing money. People are telling restaurants in the town not to serve us … People keep coming up to me to tell me I made a bad decision. It’s grown men. They are asking me why I did this to them. I told them I had to do what is best for me.

We note, not for the first time, that the relationship between Auburn and Alabama is unlike any other anywhere. (We start with an Alabama fan poisoning the trees at Toomer’s Corner and work our way deeper into the ooze.) But it is remarkable that the same young man whom one set of fans would have loved had he signed with their school is being vilified — the exact same guy, mind you — because he happened to choose the other school.

Again from Evans, via Bone:

Social media has definitely been the worst. People on Instagram are telling me how they hope I tear my ACL in Game 1. They will laugh when I do. They are saying my family is horrible and how they didn’t raise me right. It’s just crazy.

Well, yes. But we knew that already, didn’t we? Recruiting can get ugly on bad days. Social media gets ugly on its best day. And when you add the hatred intrinsic in Alabama-Auburn to the mix … well, that’s a toxic concoction.

It’s getting worse,” Evans said on Monday evening. “Someone actually put out an article about my family’s business telling all Auburn fans not to go there. We are going to eventually start losing money. People are telling restaurants in the town not to serve us.”It’s hard for me to go out and chill with my friends like I have always done because people keep coming up to me telling me I made a bad decision. It’s grown men. They are asking me why I did this to them. I told them I had to do what is best for me. – See more at: http://alabama.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1608555#sthash.OnFguqyl.dpuf

Worth Repeating:

A little advice for you:

Don't create a media circus the week before National Signing Day if you don't want hard feelings.

Don't give interviews about the process and play both sides with AL.com if you don't want hard feelings.

Don't invite 2 coaching staffs to a family birthday party and then give play by play details if you don't want want hard feelings.

Don't perpetuate the hard feelings by feeding the media AFTER national signing day.

Remember, you live in Auburn, have a business in Auburn.  Use better judgement next time and maturity and remember that loose lips sinks ships.  Also remember that until YOU turned this thing into a media frenzy, it was about Rashaan, and the Auburn fanbase would have been disappointed had he chosen bama, but not angry.  YOU chose to go there.  YOU sought attention.  YOU gave the interviews.  YOU invited all this.  And it's a shame for Rashaan, who seems to be a good kid, that he has to be lumped in the same boat as your attention seeking, never having made it yourself, self because of your last name.

Sorry brother.  You reap what you sow.  You wanted attention.  You got it.  If you want it go go away, stop talking,.  Should have done that in the first place.   War Eagle!

Thomas Brown......you employ Garner for 15 years, watching has he places player after player in the NFL.  He then returns to the school where he played and you do nothing but put the man down.. That is classless.

Junior12
Junior12

Alabama fans are targeting their own player in an effort to make Auburn people look bad. This will get worse as the player and his family want to stay in the news.

Rashaan Evans should have to play on that defense and report to Rodney Garner ? I am sorry.  I make the same choice as he.  I am certain there are many as I who would be more than happy to find out about his family business, and increase their sales, not decrease them.

That is the worst defense I have ever seen at Auburn.  It's bad.  Their claim to fame is that they are # 1 in The SEC in rushing.

Rashaan Evans is a man with his hand in the dirt on defense.  This is why he is the # 1 player.

# 1 mind you, Scout.com recruit.

He plays defense.

Where would you want your son to go ?

Where you did and where your wife did with a horrible defense ?

Or, Alabama who clearly is the better choice of the 2 for Rashaan Evans ?

I am just sorry that we do not plug the business.  This is the story of this article, his parent's business.  Aren't there more Alabama fans than Auburn ?

Sure are here on the AJ-C.

"All I did was commit to a university to get my education ...". Really?  Education in what football?  You have a offer sheet  like you have and you narrow it down to these two schools!?  Switch before its too late!

Auburn fans have the biggest Napoleon complex imaginable.  Being redneck and being owned by alabama is tough to take!

I've always said this and I'll say it again. Being mad at a 17/18 year old recruit for not choosing your school is down-right creepy.

Evans will get over it once he takes delivery of that new Escalade

I suppose there's a reason people stereotype folks from the state of Alabama. They're a different breed and it appears they live their live's based on the successes of the football team they're a fan of. I know all schools have their lunatic fringe fanbases but none like the fans in the state west of Ga. Heck, UGA had an incident where AM's residense was vandalized but thats mild compared to the venom spewed over this recruits school of choice. Irrational and immature behavior at its finest being displayed by crazed bunch of lunatics. Yes, it's one thing to be champions and the state of Al has their fair share but its another thing to act with class and represent your school with integrity and say to yourself "hey, if he doesn't want to be here then good luck to you and wish you well", if he doesn't want to be here then we don't need him and leave it at that.

GTBob

It's a shame but it's not all that surprising in today's college football world. People like to brag about the passion of college football fans. That passion has a dark side as well. The kid might be luck if all he gets is threats.

Mark, If Auburn had the AJC in their state they would riot. Can you imagine what Auburn fans would do if a paper treated them like the AJC does UGA? The AJC loves to dig up dirt on UGA and plaster it on the front page.

I copied this from an Auburn site:

It's very simple.  Are you ready?  Can you handle it?

A little advice for you:

That's exactly what you continue to do yourself LEE3333, be angry the # 1 recruit did not want to play on that sorry defense of Auburn, whose only claim to fame is leading The SEC in rushing.

Get over it.

If I knew what his family business was, I would order something right now.  I like the kid, and his mom and dad Auburn grads.

LEE3333
LEE3333

@Junior12 This is exactly what is happening.  If Thomas Brown doesn't think its the case, he simply has never had to deal with bama.  Its how they operate.

@dawg52 You are right. Old brother Cam won the Heisman and the national championship. He became a staring NFL qb and went to the playoffs this past season. If you watch your tv close enough you will see Mr. Newton doing a commercial. Now that should really get your goat. Maybe if your Georgia dawgs can beat someone besides those nerds at Georgia Tech they might get some real talent in Athens besides those ugly little bull dogs or are they really big rats dressed as dogs. Money well spent however you should have told the NCAA because they could not find anything.

JakeAU24
JakeAU24

@MoistDawg  UGA is really winning a lot of SEC and National championships.

Their not there.......

Auburn has not had a major football infraction in 24 years so really looks crooked to me.

Agreed but remember Georgia people say "thank god for Alabama"

Ridiculous. Sorry. I follow recruiting, and share disappointments like any fan--Tuitt for example. But to have any animosity towards an 18 year old for their decision of where to play, shows that an individual needs to restructure life's priorities. Come on!

On a positive note, my sons are related to me, and will likely never have to suffer such criticism!

@BCB  Is the dirt made up?  Where does it come from?  Typical victim mentality.  You voted for Obama for sure.

Very lame, So you are saying if you live in Georgia or then you can't go through the recruiting process like the other top recruits if you pick a school out of Georgia? Its no excuse for this crap and yes i know Alabama has is share but I think they're lame as well, Funny thing is that the kid or his family never disrespected au in any way. For you or anyone to justify people looking into the parents tax records and threatening to boycotte is joke.

@JakeAU24

All well and good for you to say that, but this is an 18 year senior in high school, it is kind of sad, that 20,30,40,50 something men can't act like adults, you guys give the state of Alabama a really bad name..

@JakeAU24 @MoistDawg  not getting caught and not having a infraction are 2 seprate things.  you and i and everyone else knows whats going on there.

GTBob

I didn't say it wasn't ridiculous but it exists. One Bama fan killed another Bama fan because she wasn't mad enough after Bama lost to Auburn. One Bama fan killed 100+ year old trees because he as mad. One LSU fan got genitals on his face just because he was an LSU fan. UGA fans egged Aaron Murray's house after a loss. I have personally watched people cuss out women and children at games just for wearing the wrong colors. The game has a very dark side to it that people like to ignore and excuse for passionate. Recruiting is just another extension of that and if you are going to make recruiting a circus every year then sometimes the crazies are going to make some noise.

BCB
BCB

No it's not made up and I did not vote for your brother Obama. The dirt is usually very minor but blown up by the ajc.

@gt-40 @JakeAU24

Thanks but L live in Atlanta. I don't agree with attacking any kid and have never done such.  Yes, I go to all the games etc. His dad brought a lot of this on and that was the message in the post. I think kids need to commit and let's stop all the signing day theatrics. And ALL teams have radical fans. Especially if the teams are winning.

ATLWmn

@gt-40 @JakeAU24    Well said gt-40.  What kind of moron can call himself an adult while tormenting a high schooler for choosing a different college than what strangers would choose for him?  The Alabama/Auburn rivalry is sickening, truly.  There are always a few instances every year in which each sides' fan bases go to repulsive lengths to prove their fandom.  Ridiculous.

UGA and Tech might hate each other, and so might FSU/Florida, Clemson/USC, and so on, but people need to grow up once they reach the point of boycotting a business and sending threats to a teenager because he chose a better school.

JakeAU24
JakeAU24

@MoistDawg @JakeAU24  UGA has not won a national title since 1980 if you want to reach that far back. I'v yet to read the post about infractions referencing "what's going on".

JakeAU24
JakeAU24

@MoistDawg @JakeAU24  NCAA AND the FBI investigated every Auburn program for 14 months during Cam fiasco.  So please tell me what is going on. Facts not fiction too please.

JakeAU24

@gt-40 @JakeAU24  I've not posted one bad word about RE. I copied a post I thought was dead on. His dad was complaining in an article and the response was to that. His dad created a lot of this. They invited AU players and coaches to the signing knowing they were going to uat. Come on now.....

@JakeAU24 @gt-40

Makes no difference, the school you pull for is in Alabama, and you are still giving the kid down the road because he went a little overboard during his recruiting, he is a kid, he will have to grow up soon enough, I wish fans would grow up as well.....

gt-40

@thebucket @JakeAU24@gt-40

I hear you, but you are still beating up on kids that for the most part the biggest decision that they have made in life is PS-4 or Xbox, don't get me wrong I pull for Tech, but to watch the recruiting blogs night and day and to live vicariously through a high school senior is kinda sad....

thebucket

@JakeAU24 @gt-40 So because grown-ups can't control how they treat an 18 year old senior and his family, the 18 year olds need to change their behavior?
