Why UGA’s new D mightn’t look all that different

By Mark Bradley

Jeremy Pruitt, man of the people. (Jason Getz/AP)

Under Brian VanGorder and Willie Martinez, Georgia employed a 4-3 defense. Under Todd Grantham, it switched to a 3-4. Under Jeremy Pruitt, it will use a 3-4 that might look a lot like a 4-3.

Speaking at Signing Day, Mark Richt averred that this latest change shouldn’t represent much of a change. “It’s no big deal,” he said.

The reason being: Grantham’s 3-4 essentially deployed the weakside linebacker — the “Will,” in football argot — as a de facto defensive end. The only difference, Richt said, is a matter of the placement of one man’s hand.

A linebacker assumes a two-point stance. A defensive end assumes a three-point one. (“Puts his hand in the dirt,” to invoke another grid-ism.)

Said Richt: “We used the Will linebacker as a rush guy in a two-point stance. A lot of people run the same defense but put the guy in a three-point stance.”

Even then, it might be hard to tell a 3-4 from a 4-3. No matter their preferred base defense, most teams — both collegiate and professional — use a bit of both. As an example, Richt offered this: If Georgia is playing a read-option offense, it might choose to have a defensive end take a two-point stance, so as to have his head up and be better able to, er, read the option.

And sometimes how a defense appears is a function of personal preference. Richt noted that Jarvis Jones, the great Will linebacker, liked rushing from a two-point stance. But Ray Drew or Lorenzo Carter might be more comfortable getting a hand dirty, as it were.

Don’t misunderstand: Georgia’s new base D will indeed be the 3-4. It’s what Pruitt used, to championship-winning effect, at Florida State, although it was possible to watch the Seminoles for long stretches and come away believing they favored the 4-3. (They changed looks a whole lot, in other words.)

The principles might not be all that different from what Georgia fans have been seeing. The coaching, on the other hand, might well be better.

From myajc.com, our premium site: The Class of 2014 could help Richt win the one thing he hasn’t.

Also from myajc.com: Georgia plays and recruits well; Tech plays better than it recruits.

Further reading: Mark Richt wants to coach until he’s 80 (maybe).

Still further: UGA’s Dream Team has mostly lived up to the hype.

And further: Fun with recruiting numbers: Is Georgia slipping?

Further still:

Kirby Smart will go when he is ready to go. He's not going to accept a lateral move or a HC job that will pay the same or less than what Bama  pays him.

Who cares if the D looks the same as long as they don't play the same.

I expect the Georgia D to look much different.  And it won't have anything to do with base formation.

Pruitt had to leave Bama as stated.  Smart isn't and can't leave that job.  For whatever reason he's unhirable elsewhere.  He's the Bud Foster of the SEC.

@LoyalGTFan  that Todd Grantham's hire was hailed here as the 2nd Coming :

Wrong, the comments in here were that Todd Grantham had been Defensive Coordinator at only 1 stop, and that he had been fired from that position.  And, that he never got a Defensive Coordinator position again.  Then, there were further comments that at Dallas, Todd Grantham was disliked quite a bit.

The truth about Todd Grantham is that he is the offensive lineman who played at Virginia Tech.  That he never did play defense, like myself.  That he devised this scheme of how to play defense with his background of having his hand in the dirt on the other side of the ball.

And, that he never could teach his defense to even the 8 NFL players he had 2 years' ago and that he was undisciplined himself on and off the field, a wild man whom Mark Richt in public on many occasions redressed. He even had words added to his contract to that effect.

Mark Richt refused to back Todd Grantham and called him a dumbass to James Franklin Vanderbilt coach prior to now Derek Mason, a fine football defensive back and 2-year starter in college himself and former defensive coordinator at Stanford - who is a great hire for Vanderbilt who quickly from January 17th hire date, put together a fine Vanderbilt recruiting class with 7 top-rated at their positions nationally and including three 4-Star recruits 2 of whom are defensive backs and 3rd who is a DE.

In fact, Vanderbilt signed 3 times as many 4-Star recruits than the Georgie tek coach who is starting his 7th season on the Flats.

1 National Rank Top 100 Overall best players in the nation Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason just signed in 2 weeks and 5 days.

That is one more National Rank Top 100 Overall best players in the nation than arrogant Paul Fish Fry Johnson got, and he's been at Georgie tek starting his 7th season there now.

What does that tell you ?

That our coaches in The SEC are better than your Georgie tek coaches, and that we recruit better, especially on the defense.

Todd Grantham was nothing but question marks when he came in, and frankly Jeremy Pruitt only has 1 years' experience at his position himself - so we shall see.

Georgie tek, your team ?

Not a hope in the world, having lost to us at your house for the 7th consecutive game.

And, # 47 ranked recruiting class with

-0- Top 100 National Rank recruits and average rank of the recruits Scout.com does rank of # 84 of your signees yesterday.

Vanderbilt's Derek Mason average ranked recruit for the recruits ranked at their position today by Scout.com is 5 places better across the board than your 7-year tenure head coach Paul Johnson's recruits at # 79.

Mark Richt also made Todd Grantham apologize to the Florida kicker in public, who by the way made the kick anyway.

So, I do not know why a Georgie tek troll would be in here talking about defenses, while you gave up 41 points on Defense to us and allowed Todd Gurley II to score four (4) TD on you, same as Herschel Walker did.

I couldn't care less what u trolls post! Pruitt was the DC of the national champions and only allowed 12 points a game...no matter if it was in the ACC that's still great numbers. Bama can't afford to pay coaches that want to leave because saban and smart make so much. Pruitt wanted to be an DC!....so he left....how hard is it for you trolls to understand that? Well never mind! You trolls can rott in your own hatred for all I care! Lmao!

The fact is we don't know how good Pruitt is but a change had to be made.

If Pruitt were that great of a coach Saban or FSU would have ponied up the money to keep him. And, I remember a few years ago UGA fans talking about how great a hire Grantham was. He was the greatest coming as a D coordinator.

Whatever defense UGA runs next season....will be a successful one.....because Pruitt has won every where he has been. I think eventually Pruitt will be a better DC than Kirby Smart.

Ohhhh so it'll be a 4-3 base defense? Not bad! I have always said we were a better 4-3 defense than a 3-4 defense. I never understood why Grantham didn't run more 4-3 when he had those two behemoths in John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers, plug those guys inside at the two DT spots and you easily have 700 pounds of man just between those two. Oh well, it comes down to coaching. I look forward to seeing this group.

Pruitt is  going  to run a  3-4  base. His  first interview."First thing is I'm not really familiar with what was done here before, but we are and will be a 3-4 defense. However, in this day and time when you look out there, you've got people who say they're 3-4 or 4-3 but at the end of the day, you watch teams play and there's so much difference. One week you might play against a team that has two tight ends and one running back, and next week it might be one running back and four wide receivers. So teams that are 3-4, you'll see them line up in 4-3 defenses and teams that are 4-3, you'll see them line-up in odd defenses. I think you've got to be able to do both. That's what we'll do. We'll figure out who our best guys are and we'll get our best guys on the field."

i think the sparkling dimonds from pruits national championships rings are blinding me from seeing if the defenses look the same.  you tech and bama trolls are a little nervous now arent you?  LOL!!!

NCDawg
NCDawg

I think we have the personnel to truly be multiple.  And I think we will still be mostly a 4-2-5 anyway.  It is my hope that we might have guys swapping ends to rush from or swinging a rush rush specialist on an inside lane to really make O-lines work to protect their QB.  And I want to see guys in the backfield disrupting plays instead of aiming to stop a runner for no gain.  I bet if you took away all of our sacks our defense in the past 4 years only had a couple dozen tackles for loss.

The alignment isn't what is important anyway.  It's what the player's are taught and how aggressively they pursue the ball.  it's about how they respond to the unfolding play and their attitude in attacking it.

I will be looking for a "not on my watch" attitude.  I want offenses to leave the field not wanting to see our defense for a long time.  That isn't impossible.  It is all about attitude.

I am looking forward to hearing our players take on what we are doing.  That will tell us everything we need to know.

@hot13dog  I think coaching a National Championship defense is a solid indicator the guy knows X's and O's. Better stated... we don't know what Pruitt can do with our talent, which I would argue is not at FSU's level. Pruitt will have his hands full trying to work with our DB's.

DawgGoneIt
DawgGoneIt

@LoyalGTFan  GRANTHAM had never been a college defensive coordinator before coming to Georgia. Don't believe me? Better do your research. Pruitt is fresh off leading FSU's defense to #1 status and a National Title win. And everywhere Pruitt has coached, his units have been outstanding. As UGA fans, why should we feel any different than excited? Let me guess, you'd rather have TED ROOF than PRUITT! LMAO!

@Birminham__Jacket

Why is it hilarious or pitiful ? A lot of these guys are retired and give a lot of their time and money to UGA. Football is important to them. Most of these guys are alumni. Don't blame us because Georgia Tech couldn't compete in the SEC and left . You have a lot to be proud of at Tech from academics to Basketball , you have no reason to be jealous of Georgia. They are two completely different school . Both have their weaknesses and their strengths.  Accept what you have at Tech and stop cutting down a School that you have no interest in. Life is too short to waste time that way.

@Birminham__Jacket  Not nearly as pitiful as a butthurt Techie that hovers over every UGA-related news article, just itching to make a fool of himself.

NCDawg

@DawgGoneIt Actually Grantham did that.  In fact a bunch of Bama's rushing yards in the SEC CG came when both were in the game together.  They just got rolled around and used like shields that kept our LBs from getting clean shots at the runners.

SkokieDog
SkokieDog

@ElemennoP I agree with your sentiment. Better tackling will be a leading indicator of improvement on that side of the ball.

ThomasBrownUGA

You're good Elemenno !  Been reading your comments tonight.  Good stuff !

When you give up 23 points a game Todd Grantham with 8 NFL players on Defense, don't recruit defense very well and have to replace 8 NFL players you did not recruit here, but still beat Georgie tek all four (4) games he played them, one mightn't have thought that Georgie tek fans fresh off giving up 41 points to us, would be the last ones to want to discuss Defense.

Ted Roof, who up and quit his gig at Georgie tek earlier this decade, and left to take a demotion at Duke at the same position exactly, could not possibly be in favor at Georgie tek, and even less so given that Ted Roof couldn't figure out in Overtime that Mark Richt had told Mike Bobo to give the ball to Todd Gurley II every down of every over-time.

50 yards later and two (2) more touchdowns on top of the 108 yards Todd Gurley II put up in regulation, including two (2) Touchdowns already against Ted Roof.

Ted Roof is a poor defensive coordinator who has demonstrated he is not loyal to his alma mater.

"Among its most noteworthy accomplishments this season was holding Pittsburgh to minus-5 rushing yards."

In fact, Georgie tek has faced this season :

# 77 rushing offense Alabama A&M

# 112 rushing offense Pittsburgh

# 76 rushing offense Virginia

# 42 rushing offense Syracuse

# 90 rushing offense North Carolina

# 57 rushing offense Duke who played you without their QB

# 97 rushing offense Elon

And, Georgie tek is # 82 against the pass

Georgia is # 75 against the pass, but you do not believe in Forward Pass to take advantage.

Of the 7 Georgie tek “wins” all 2013 season, the Rushing Offense against your Defense averages # 79 and in that average, you are averaging both Alabama A & M # 77 and Elon # 97 in completely different LESSER divisions of college football.

You have faced the Average # 100 Rushing Offense, and of those Pittsburgh is the dead last worst of your opponents ranked # 112 in Rushing Offense and it is :

"Among its most noteworthy accomplishments this season was holding Pittsburgh to minus-5 rushing yards."

For Georgie tek to win, 3 things must happen :

(1) Hell Freeze over

(2) Snowballs’ Chances in Hell on Cold Day in Hell improve

(3) When Pigs Fly

That's what I said pre-game while every AJ-C sportswriter was saying this was Georgie tek's best chance to beat us.

Ted Roof 2013 Season :

# 83 Passing Defense as demonstrated by weak arm no experience back-up QB 300 yds

# 79 Team Passing Efficiency Defense as demonstrated by backup QB 5 for 5 Red Zone vs you

# 85 Turnover Margin 1 interception our backup & 2 by us vs your best player who quit your team

# 99 Fourth Down Defense as demonstrated backup weak arm 1st game QB 100% vs Ted Roof

# 51 First Down Defense Georgie tek as demonstrated by Todd Gurley II 1st down OT TD, TD

$ 1.65 million dollar 3-year contract for Ted Roof, and this what he produced ?

What I care about on Defense, is not giving up points 21 or 23 per game.

C-Kirk
C-Kirk

@NCDawg

Both South Carolina and Clemson will have new Quarterbacks next year and the more confusion we can generate moving around to confuse them trying to  read what Defense we are going to run the better we will be . That is why Park will probably be Red Shirted this year . He looked pretty bad in the Army All American game.

As bad as Groh was, GT never finished 79th in country in scoring defense, despite having clearly inferior talent to UGA.  So I'm not sure you really want to get into a pissing contest about who's DC was worse.

@ThomasBrown Well Thomas, what DC can have a great defense if he doesn't have talented recruits?? I'd give Roof the benefit of doubt until he has great recruits, and he isn't going to get them at Tech.

Only giving up 21 points a game would have put the Dawgs in the SEC championship game. With the prolific offenses of the college game today, only giving up 21 is good. But,....you also have to have one of those prolific offenses and hope a Grantham is coaching the other team.
