Mark Richt wants to coach until he’s 80 (maybe)

ATHENS — Mark Richt, who coaches Georgia, will turn 54 in two weeks. He’s not yet at the age where recruits are asking if he’ll be around for all four (or five) of their collegiate seasons. He believes there’s a reason.

“I look so young,” Richt said Wednesday, speaking on Signing Day. “If it weren’t for these extra 40 pounds I’m carrying, I could pass for 40.”

Then this, smiling: “Coach (Bobby) Bowden went until he was 80. So I’ve got another 27 years.”

Then this, still smiling: “I’m young compared to a lot of head coaches. Some guys coach deep into their 60’s and 70’s.”

Then this: “I’ve got a long way to go.”

Earlier in the day, Richt told a group of Georgia fans he feels more sprightly than ever. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who has worked alongside Richt since 2001, said: “I agree with what he said. He’s more energized than he’s ever been. It hadn’t crossed my mind that he might ever step down.”

From myajc.com, our premium site: Class of 2014 could help Richt win the one thing he hasn’t.

Further reading: UGA’s Dream Team has mostly lived up to its hype.

That means that UGA will kick Tech's tail until Coach Richt turns 80. That is a beautiful thought. I love Coach Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs. It is great to be a Georgia Bulldog!

"while he hasn't beat the top teams in the big games recently, he absolutely did 2001-2007."

So what changed?  Did Richt suddenly change his coaching style?  Of was the reason we won in those years something other than Richt (Van Gorder?)?  If Richt wants to coach until 80, let him go coach at Tech, where they don't care about winning.

class80olddog
class80olddog

If an announcement was made that Richt would certainly be coaching for the next 27 years, I would either have to give up watching college football or start pulling for Auburn, even though UGA is my alma mater.  I would like to see my team win another National Championship before ai die.

Leia. Your hate and misinformation is embarrassing. The Georgia football team lead Grad rates last year. Even over Vandy. And by the way, what firm is Reggie Ball with? I can't seen to find him in any Engineering Journals.

How many of Richt's signees will be Special Admits that most schools wouldn't touch? I'm guessing the usual 85-90%. It's really quite pathetic that that many of his players are functionally illiterate.

But that's one statistic that Mark Richt never mentions. Why is that?

96JB
96JB

In other news, Atlanta's homeless shelter benefited from all the left over food at the Tech football offices due to no one showing up who cared. Johnson likes to tell us he doesn't like "star rankings" and the classes being rated and such.....You know, That's the spin I might use also in his shoes.

Richt's teams were trouble for everyone when Van Gorder was running the D. Martinez and Grantham took it to new depths. If Pruitt & co. can turn it around, it could spell trouble for the foes. Scoring ain't ever been a problem.

I am so glad I was around in '80 to see UGA win National title.  I won't see that again if  Richt coaches until 80 and is still at UGA..  Could someone put a muzzle on ThmasBrown.  What a waste of space.

Nice to see everyone ready to offer their opinion day Mark Richt probably signed his best recruiting class.  Alabama, LSU and Ohio State have better classes than Mark Richt just signed, and UGA, FSU, and Texas A & M are all right there together behind AL, LSU, OSU.  Florida, vols, Auburn, Southern California are all worse classes than UGA, FSU and Texas A & M.  We signed 3 Top 100 overall, 2 of whom are 5-Star.  There are 7 schools who did better than that at the top end, 3 SEC.

For his 13 seasons, Mark Richt is # 5 in most wins compared to all 125 schools FBS 1-A for 2001-2013.

Yes, we've fallen on hard times for 6 seasons now.  It's well documented after 2007.

Recruiting has never been Mark Richt's weakness; it's been his coaching staffs who have had no discipline on or off the field; and while he hasn't beat the top teams in the big games recently, he absolutely did 2001-2007.

Still, 7 teams ranked for the season, beat # 4 South Carolina and # 14 LSU and lost the other 5. Not good.  Last year 2012 beat # 9 Florida.

16-13 vs teams ranked top 25 for the season 2001-2007

7-22 since.

Every single person we had commitments from signed with us.  Kids love Mark Richt; if that is not good enough for you, you don't have to come here - they do.

So many handles and all their posts never mention whom it is who is their team, but I doubt seriously it is any of the only 4 teams who in fact have won more football games than Mark Richt 2001-2013.

Mark Richt just signed :

# 4 best football player in North Carolina # 1 Rivals and # 4 Scout TE, # 79 overall nation we need TE Jeb

# 11 best football player in Florida and # 91 best overall football player in nation # 5 DE Keyon

# 6 best JUCO player in the nation and he's # 1 best defensive back as a JUCO transfer Shattle who is

6' 2" 184 lbs Auburn and Ohio State really wanted Safety speedster good hands, biggest need on our team

# 26 best football player in North Carolina # 13 DT in nation Lamont, I was hanging on that one

4.34 CB when we really need defensive backs  # 1 AA State Champ 100 yd dash # 57 nation WR Rico

# 42 best football player in FL # 35 RB nation # 37 WR nation return specialist Isaiah McKenzie badly need

# 2 Scout # 3 Rivals best RB nation, # 2 best overall player in Florida, # 13 best overall nation Sony need

# 6 Rivals # 9 Scout best RB nation, # 3 best overall player in Georgia, # 35 best overall nation Nick need

# 8 Scout QB # 12 Rivals QB nation, # 4 best player in So Car Jacob, 6' 3" can run 4 yr starter 3.82 GPA

# 21 Offensive Tackle in the nation, Dyshon bigger gets than this don't come along huge need

# 14 best overall player Florida, # 6 Rivals Offensive Linemen # 11 Scout OL how bad we need Isaiah Wynn

# 14 best overall player Georgia, # 10 Defensive Tackle nation Kendall and # 26 Scout.com best DT nation

# 29 best overall player in Georgia, # 14 Scout LB # 15 Rivals LB, Middle Linebacker Detric

# 4 best overall player in Georgia, # 36 best overall player in nation, # 3 Rivals # 5 Scout DE 4.6 Lorenzo

# 53 best overall player in Georgia, # 24 Rivals # 41 Scout Offensive Lineman in nation Jake

# 6 best overall player in state of Georgia, # 71 overall best player in nation, # 6 Cornerback Malkom big

# 69 best overall player in state of Georgia 4.4 speed in 40-yard dash Dommick who is not his brother

# 39 best overall player in state of Georgia 4.5 speed # 51 best WR in nation Shakenneth

# 47 Tight End in the nation Hunter another need we have isn't it

# 109 best Wide Receiver in the nation according to Scout.com Gilbert

# 100 best Cornerback in the nation Shaquille

Preferred walk-on soccer player kicks-off through the goal posts Macon Stratford again William Ham

22 players who meet our needs, could use more OL 2015 class, more DB 2015, another TE, FB, more LB

Please remember to share with me that Alabama, LSU and Ohio State out-recruited us 2014 and no one else really did with Texas A & M and FSU right there with us next and vols and Auburn and Southern California all worse than these 6, and remember complaining about recruiting when recruiting is not Mark Richt's issue, requires that you share you chicken sheets who your team is. Don't hide behind a handle without your team name in it, saying how bad UGA is when obviously on this day, your team did not do better than us, such as notably Georgie tek # 47, again.  Ho hum, indeed for your # 33 won/lost record Mark Richt Era to his # 5 most wins.

Only a fool would leave a cush position that pays millions with no accountability for results. Those here still hanging on UGA's ownership of GT over the years have totally lost focus. nothing against GT but UGA should be looking for NTs not gauging their season on beating a team far below them.

Probably about the same number as tech or just about anyone else.  We've all heard your player interviews with their mild command of the english language.  It's not a reach to say their SAT scores are below the average of the general student body.  Georgia does not admit partial qualifiers if that's what you're implying.  If you paid more attention, you'd realize that's why we lost that one recruit to Marshall.

ThomasBrownUGA
ThomasBrownUGA

@96JB

It would not be what I would say.  I would say that we recruited an average of # 84 at their position ranking, and that I am more than willing to have any 2015 recruits visit here committed elsewhere or committed here wanting to visit elsewhere, that we're not satisfied being 7-6 four years in a row, and that we recognize the Scout.com # 15 recruiting class by stark contrast to all mine since # 52 or # 47 every year are a reflection of what Vad Lee, too, told us - that I am announcing that I will coach my players how to pass, and have a QB # 62 in the nation I just got who can run fast and throw and that I promised him he could throw the football 15 times a game his career here, maybe 20 times a game.  The defensive recruits the next 4 years will have the benefit of practicing daily against this QB and I think he's going to be pretty good at passing and running and so do about 29 other scholarship offers from mostly not all small schools.

I am going to do all I can do to recruit, starting by getting rid of Joey Hamilton I put back in that capacity again just recently.  Does he get random drug tests ?  What is the policy if he fails, since he was not fired last time, either ?

ThomasBrownUGA
ThomasBrownUGA

@96JB

Scoring has been a problem, too.  I seem to recall UCF and we scored what was it  6 points ?

1.  We scored 17 points vs Florida last year but defense held them to 9 or we lose 3 interceptions.

2. We scored only 7 points again vs South Carolina 2012.  Not winning many games scoring 7 points, 96JB.

3. Scored only 10 points playing LSU for SEC Championship 2011. Sorry that does not cut it.

4. Scored 12 vs Mississippi State 2010 and lost when they not ranked game time.

5. Scored 17 vs Florida 2009, not win many with only 17 points - and, 1 wouldn't think vs FL ever.

6. Fell behind Alabama at home supposedly us # 1 that preseason 30-0 at half time.  Although we came back some, you cannot start out 30-0 and no that is not just the fault of the defense, but the offense, too, right 96JB ?

7. Scored 14 in 2007 vs vols in yet another blow-out, obviously.

8. Scored 10 only vs Florida in 2005.  That is offense's problem. They only scored 14 and we lost.  This was the game Mark Richt and Mike Bobo told us Joe Tereshinski III was so great, when he the only QB who could have lost to Florida 2005.

9. Scored 6 against Auburn in 2004 when we had Brian VanGorder.  We lost that game.

10. 2004 scored 14 vs the vols and lost David Greene, again.

11. Scored 13 points 2003 vs LSU and got blown-out in SEC Championship.

12. Scored 10 vs LSU also 2003 at their house and lost David Greene again.

13. Scored 16 vs unranked game time Boston College and lost that.

14. Scored 10 vs Florida 2001 and lost that.

15. Scored 9 vs South Carolina 2001and lost that, David Greene.

In fact, 96JB this is a bone of contention from me that our Offense is a no show in our most embarrassing Losses I just named the 14 most embarrassing performances by our offense costing us losses, and one we won despite the showing by the offense clearly no good.

RealProblem
RealProblem

@ThomasBrown  Well, I will say one thing for you Brown you are Kool-Aid at its best. Not to burst your bubble, but we got 3 of the best 12 in Georgia. LSU got 7 of their best 12. Fact is by most recruiting services we finished 7th best in the SEC, but do not let facts get in your way. Yes, we did finish in the top 10 in the country in most services.

I have two problems that maybe you can help me with.....one is we do not play the country, wish we did, we play in the SEC.

Second, this is the second year in a row we have finished 7th in recruiting in the SEC....NOT GOOD.

Correct Geoff, again.

Hope Scholarship limits have forced state of Georgia high school students to do very well, certainly that there are no issues with Georgie tek finding qualified to play football at Georgie tek recruits in this state alone.

Yet, they are unable.

So, they dream up excuses when there are none.

POAD2013

GeoffDawg

Same for tech.  If you're talking football or basketball.  Again, "easy" is a relative and subjective term so it doesn't mean a whole lot.

GeoffDawg
GeoffDawg

I know you're trolling but just to humor you, Georgia has never been an easy (such a relative term) school to get into.  For at least the last twenty years since the inception of HOPE, it's gotten considerably more difficult.  That's why you have all these other colleges and universities as part of the University system of Georgia.  To take the runoff that can't get into the flagship school.

Honestly, I'm not here to get into a constant back and forth.  I really just enjoy a good discussion on football between reasonable people.  Enjoy the rest of your day.

ThomasBrownUGA
ThomasBrownUGA

@POAD2013

That's not true either poad.

It is a fact that your most recent 4-year rolling average federal graduation report shows that you graduate three fourths of your men's scholarship student athletes in sports such as men's tennis, men's track and field, men's swimming and diving, and men's golf, but graduate half your football scholarship recruits given the same 6 years to do so as any other school, # 36 in the nation or not.

Quit acting like you're # 1 Princeton or Harvard at # 36 best college.  We're # 60.  We're closer to you than you to they, and we don't hear anyone else bragging they are # 36 at anything.

You can take a study for 1 year recently and show that they are on target to graduate taking rocks for jocks at Georgie tek and all management majors not engineering students, but by the time they actually get to a point where they on a rolling 4-year Federal graduation report showing as graduating in 6 years' time, you are talking about 1 report last year about 1 year expected graduation rates, not a 4-year rolling Federal Graduation Report used by DOE giving all scholarship recruits at Georgie tek 6 years to graduate like they do every other school.

The question remains, Georgie tek, surely this guy POAD is not your spokesman ?  If Georgie tek can graduate three-fourths of your men in all these other men's sports, why is it then that in football, you graduate HALF your scholarship recruits ?

Get a hold of what Georgie tek is forced to hand all recruits about their federal graduation report rolling 4-year average.

ThomasBrownUGA
ThomasBrownUGA

@POAD2013 Georgie tek is NOT LISTED in this one you type about.  Show me Georgie tek's special admits are zero, 315 points lower for your football team than the student-body. They're all special admits, almost every one.  You do not accept 315 points lower than the rest.  That is definition of special admit nerd.

ThomasBrownUGA
ThomasBrownUGA

@POAD2013

That is your proof ?  It reads, since you obviously cannot :

Georgie tek's "football players still scored 315 SAT points lower than their classmates."

You think those are NOT special admits 315 points lower than the student body ?

This proves my point, you have MORE special admits than we.

ThomasBrownUGA
ThomasBrownUGA

@POAD2013 Why back to racial slur Poad and 2013 again ?  If you had a URL Link to such B.S. and it showed your special admits to Georgie tek, you would not make this up but provide it.
