A great move: Louisville is set to rehire Petrino

By Mark Bradley

Most everyone in Atlanta sees Bobby Petrino as King Rat, for good reason: He ran out — stop me if you’ve heard this already — on the Atlanta Falcons after 13 games in 2007. Then he was fired by Arkansas for falling off a motorcycle that was also transporting a woman who wasn’t his wife. In sum, he’s not a contender for World’s Nicest Guy.

He is, however, among the better football coaches extant, and Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Petrino will be introduced as Louisville’s new coach — he was also Louisville’s old coach, having left the Cardinals in January 2007 to join the Falcons — on Thursday. Some people, perhaps most people, will see this as a case of a bad guy getting a second (or third, or fourth) chance he didn’t deserve. I see it as another instance of talent winning out.

And what, I ask, is coaching football if not a talent? Wherever he has gone as a collegiate head coach — Louisville, Arkansas, even in his one-year rehabilitation stint at Western Kentucky — he has won. (I maintain he’d have won with the Falcons had Michael Vick not been indicted.) The Cardinals were faced with having to replace a superb coach in Charlie Strong, who left for Texas. They wound up subbing out one of the two coaches to lead Louisville to a BCS bowl victory with the only other man who’d done it.

I’m not sure if we should applaud Petrino for this latest bit of career advancement, but Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich deserves a hand. (Jurich is just about the best in the business, FYI.) There aren’t many schools that could lose a man as capable as Strong and find somebody just as skilled. And I’m guessing Jurich will be smart enough to include a no-motorcycle clause in Petrino’s latest contract.

And now he is hiring Grantham!  That motorcycle mis-hap must have caused some previously unseen cognitive damage.  It's a great day to be a Dawg!

I have my doubts that Petrino would have succeeded in the NFL.   Jurich is possibly just as much a philaderer as Petrino.  How do you teach college athletes to not respect their women, their marriage vows, their children..........?  Hire Bobby Petrino..........that sends an awesome message.

"And what, I ask, is coaching football if not talent?  C'mon Mark, that's a pretty shallow view.  You need to be able to respect your coach along many lines but possibly not least, the character of a man.  And of that, Petrino has none.

@ brokenknuckle275 I so hope you're right. That would make me feel a lot better about the entire situation. My biggest hope is now, booster $ dries up and goes away completely, nobody's mom lets them go be associated w this piece of human scum, they win about 6 games total in the next 3 years, he gets fired again and we never have to hear his name after that.

Winning comes first above all else, especially the character of the head coach

Will he have his own motorcycle parking spot?

After re-reading this one Mark I've got to ask. Did you just forget to turn on the sarcasm font?

If Petrino had landed a job in the pros I would agree with you, Bradley. But in the college ranks there is a teaching and role modeling expectation and standard that is not necessarily required at the pro level. But wait - there's Saban and Miles and many other successful (evidently measured only these days by win and loss records I guess) college coaches where similar contract jumping pasts have been ignored as well. Guess we now know where you stand in this chain - WIN WIN WIN BABY ... the name of the game.

Football is about winning on any level.  In the end all will be forgiven if you win.  Just check wth any problem child in spors, coach or player, and they will tell you the same thing.  Just win baby and you will be king again.  It is a sorry state of affairs, but that's the way it is.  Same applies to politics.

What he will lack on  the recruiting side, he will makeup for on the coaching side, I expect. Sort of opposite from UGA.

Mark,

"There aren't many schools that could lose a man as capable as Strong and find somebody just as skilled."

Sure there were ... that would be every school who didn't factor in character into the equation.  If it weren't for the character issues, he would probably be the hc at Texas instead of Louisville.  But I hope they make him pay a hugh buyoff if he chooses to move somewhere else again.  Say like every penny they paid him up to that point?

No motorcycle clause?

What about a no bimbo clause ?

No running out on everyone clause, too ?

That is a surprising commentary from you.  Indeed, Petrino is a coach who wins.  However, is that all you want for your school if you are an athletic director?  I guess Louisville is a school that believes in second chances, forgiving Rick Petino on his very public scandal, and now taking back a coach who agreed to a 10 year contract only to leave months later for the Falcons (after a secret plane trip to Auburn to talk about a job that wasn't yet vacant).  This is not a "great hire" for Louisville.  It sinks them further into the sleaze.  I'll not root for Louisville as long as Jurich is the AD.

A POS, however talented, is still a stinking POS.

Bobby Petrino is a stinking POS, and not even a National Championship can change that.  No school president in his right mind, and with any desire for integrity, would EVER hire this idiot!

Lotsa college kids are still in need of role models.  A steaming, stinking, POS is obviously not a good one..

Rick Pitino, Bobby Petrino the place is a sex hall of fame for coaches.   I can only imagine the recruiting that goes on in that place.

Hard to tell your kids to be good people when over and over they see that being a good person doesn't mean jack in the real world. Winning at all costs is all that matters.

Unfortunately.

Recruiting might have just gotten a lil harder & L-ville might be an 8 win team at best now..

Listening to him pitch a momma or grand momma of a player& speaking of character, or loyalty or not quitting on your team???  It might have worked at a lower institution such as WKy where the quality of player is not up to par.  But when going into a big time recruits home???  The teams/coaches that want the same recruits will bring up Character, Loyalty &  Not QUITTING on your teammates - EVERY TIME!!  Book it!!

LOL

The NCAA wanted to sanction Manzell for selling autographs, but have said nothing about Petrino selling his soul.

Yeah.  And the Boy Scouts used to stand for morality, too.

And based on this hiring, would George Costanza get fired today for banging the clean up lady on his desk?

Petrino is an a$$hat and Louisville are schmucks for hiring him back.  He'll be constantly interviewing for the next best job that comes a long.  One would think that an institution of higher learning would aspire to surround themselves with high quality people.

Mr. Bradley:   How right you are.  Winning college football games is the only thing that counts in life.

Who cares that Petrino put a female student on the payroll so she would have sex with him?  Who cares that hiring Petrino sends a message that any sense of morality or justice matters?  Why should any winning football coach be held accountable for ANYTHING they do?

As Penn State taught us, closing your eyes to an assistant football coach molesting young children in the schools showers doesn't matter as long as the college football team wins.

Thanks Mark for helping us see this.

@TDF3Then they should just ditch the so-called academics altogether and just  make the NCAA the official NFL farm system. All it has been for years anyway is can the ringers wearing our laundry beat the ones wearing yours.

@FoSho Maybe they could ride share with Goff and Donnan

Just do a web search by the columnists byline in the AJC search. A calendar should appear on the webpage and you should be able to navigate back (unless it has been placed in the stacks).

@DoctorNo " One would think that an institution of higher learning would aspire to surround themselves with high quality people. "

University of Louisville  is down there with University of Alabama at Birmingham as an institution of higher learning, Louisville ranked # 161 in U. S. News and World Report Best Colleges 2014  # 161, so as you can see, they really do not care about their reputation.

Louisville only cares about winning.

@AtlJack I liked it when our youth's leaders had something called 'character'. Apparently, winning really REALLY is everything.
